As you all seen in the Breeding forum, Jet had 8 live puppies and they are all growing well. There were two of the puppies whos weights werent keeping up with the others, we have now made sure they get the priority milk and it seems to be working! They have all put on weight 4 days now since birth and the weights range from 1lb 1oz - 1lb 3oz! I hope you enjoy the new pics! This was little "Flash" who i had to resuscitate!!
They are very, very, cute puppies! For completeness on this thread, I feel that it is important to draw to the attention of readers the previous conversations about the fact there are no health tests available for the parents of these puppies. Sorry to be a killjoy at a happy time, but hope everyone understands why this is the responsible thing to do to guard against the eventuality of anyone being interested in the availability of these puppies shown on this forum – a place where we try to support high standards in all aspects of dog welfare and breeding. And as a dog owner who has had my life and work career changed by owning a dog with an inherited disease (albeit one that there is currently no test for) it’s something I personally feel very strongly about. http://thelabradorforum.com/forum/n...rador-breeding-genetics/237080-bitch-pregnant
I agree with what you and the editor have stated before and now AGAIN! Yes it was a mistake on my part and again this was discussed in the previous thread. But to bring it up again is a bit unfair! Im enjoying this experience and as i stated before, i have not come onto this forum to sell the pups to anyone on here. As for you stating there were no "health tests" for the parents of the puppies, again i showed you it was JUST Jet who had not been tested, the sire has been tested for eyes, hips and elbows, so i would appreciate it if you would take that comment back! Please let me enjoy the experience and let me share it with others. I NOW understand how important testing is and again i acknowledged this previously, but for you to discuss this again AND to state that neither parent was tested is i feel a bit unfair. I hope you understand this.
Ive been reading the book of the bitch and it states that i should advertise when the pups have reached 4 weeks old with a view to selling them to their new owners when they reach 7-8 weeks. We are planning to keep the last puppy left and my daughter is so excited about that. Ive already set my plan out for what to ask and check with prospective owners as well as carrying out home visits. Ive already sourced items which i want to send with the puppy to their new homes (like a little welcome pack). Ive had alot of enquiries already from potential owners who are really interested. Even though Jet hasnt had any health checks (as everyone by now is aware of!!) they know that she came from one of the stud owners previous litters. Nigel Carville (sires owner) has been breeding, training and working labs for years and the Sire of these pups is a Field Trial Champion and HAS had health checks done on eyes, hips and elbows, as mentioned "previously". So im well prepared lol, for any questions and planning for making sure Jets pups find the best possible homes they could have!
They are gorgeous. Cupar came from a litter of 8 and thanks to Facebook I get to see the progress of 4 of them. I'm so glad they're in the house and you have children. I've had a dog that was bred in a hut and not socialised with life before being homed. That dog led an extremely stressful life and I strongly believe it was because of it. Cupar was reared in a house with a tv in the sitting room and children. He came from an active house and I really believe that he is as unfazed by things because of it. All his litter siblings that I watch are the same. I do agree that health testing should be done but I also and I can't say this strongly enough, puppies must also be socialised within the first precious 12 weeks and that starts with the breeder. So you're off to a wonderful start for them. They can get used to everyday household life. Children , adults and noise that a family make. Congratulations on these beautiful puppies.
Many thanks for your lovely comments and they are really appreciated. There should be no problems with these puppies and loud noises as my children have taken care of that lol. I've been surprised how Jet has been with the kids around at this time. She has allowed them into the whelping box (under our supervision of course) but watches them like a hawk when they are holding the pups. Ive been hoovering, doing dishes etc in the kitchen next to where they are, so they will be well acclimatised to a family environment. Like you have done with Cupar, i also hope that the new owners will keep in touch and let me see how Jets babies are getting on.
I understand why my previous post upset you, and why this one will too – I understand that you don’t want anyone mentioning the mistake of no health tests and you want to move on, be happy and enjoy sharing the puppies with other people. I really do appreciate and understand why this is what you want to do. But this is not the time to forget the mistake you made. It is exactly the time to think very hard about it. To bring this matter up again now is actually the very fairest thing to do – the very fairest thing for the future owners of these puppies. I completely appreciate that you can’t go back and correct the mistake now, but it's quite wrong to forget the mistake - but instead you do have to make up your mind about what you say to the people who buy these puppies. I think you should think carefully about what you say. And instead of pointing to the sire’s FTC status (which is irrelevant to the health of the puppies, and it is irrelevant whether one parent was tested – this is simply not good enough), instead have a long and truthful discussion with all the future owners about the implications of no health tests. I do understand that this might mean you are finding homes for the puppies rather than “selling” them but this is now the way to minimise the impact of the mistake you made.
Lovely cute puppies Fingers crossed they all will be healthy. Are you planning to breed again? If yes please make sure you run health tests before.
Of course i will be open and frank about the puppies when i am selling them and finding new homes and the only reason i bred Jet was to have a puppy through her. As for the FTC status, yes its a bonus that the sire is one BUT as i have pointed out before and yet again i need to reiterate, the sire had health checks done (Hips 4.4, Elbow 0, Eyes clear 2014, PRA/CNM Clear). It was unfortunate that i didnt get Jet checked, but thats something i have done and hopefully all being well will not regret. You have said your piece, we have all listened and digested, we all know i made a mistake and now the puppies are here i will be making sure i get them the best possible and caring homes they deserve, nevermind the financial aspect! I have never stated and have never felt ive been in this to make money!!!! So please respect me a little more than you have been doing. Now can we please draw a line under this, other people on here have asked to be shown more pics of the puppies and if they want me to share my experience of breeding and whelping Jet, then i will. If someone on here doesnt want me to comment on these aspects, then fair enough. Thank you
Thanks again, yes God willing they will all be healthy puppies. No im not planing to breed again as i was only wanting one litter so i could keep a pup of Jets.
I'm extremely glad to hear that - it's great that you are going to be completely open with the potential new owners about the risks they are running. That's exactly the right and honest thing to do. Well done.
