Willow is coming up to 10 months now and about a month ago on our morning walk i started including a bit of jogging while she was sniffing rabbits out :) she is ALWAYS off lead as i walk through teh farmers footpaths/farm tracks. i was walking her for 30 mins and jogging for 10 mins. she doenst run with me and just potters about.

about 2 weeks ago i started runing for about 20 mins of the route so walknig for 10. again she is not intersted in jogging with me and potters about sniffing and finding sticks.

this week i met a friend on the track and she was jogging with her dog and we joined them and we actually jogged 3 miles with the dogs. Willow had loads of run playing with the other dog. Is this bad to do? Again she is off lead the whole time through farm tracks.

It is too early for me to jog 3 miles with her a few times a week?

It sounds ok to me. I'd say it sounds very different from running on hard surfaces on lead - I'd wait a while for that, but if Willow is anything like Charlie, who was always zooming around off lead much, much faster than I could travel, me jogging (not that there is any chance of that) would make zero difference to the amount of exercise he got on an off lead walk.

So I guess it depends on how much it increases Willow's exercise from what she is doing now, and take it slowly?

The only other thought I had reading your post was about when you say Willow isn't interested in jogging with you. By this I take it to mean she is travelling roughly in the same direction as you but doing her own thing? You might want to teach her to jog at heel on command. My OH did this with Charlie, it was very easy to teach, as running along is FUN compared to walking at heel, and it's handy - we are completing a rehabilitation from injury and jogging with OH is part of the programme set out by the physio. Particularly as those rabbits she is sniffing might start being a powerful distraction to roam further away from you.

My friends run cani-cross, with the paras, they start of pretty slow and build up very carefully, I can ask them for you. It is quite important to have the correct lead and harness apparently.

Thanks Julie. Was all off lead. On grass on farm tracks. Yes totally agree - Willow only has one speed when we walk - Fast ! :)

Currently she was walked 30-40 mins AM and 30 mins PM - I will only run with her 3-4 AM's a week and the 3 mile route takes me 33 mins. I wont increase the milage from 3 miles until she is a year.

Sorry i just meant she isnt trying to keep up with me and isnt far from me at all. she does heel off lead and will jog with me if we are passing someone and i ask her to. i am happy for her to potter about jsut in front or just behind at her pace or fly about with her dog friend

No, nor are we, hubby is thinking along the same lines as you though and thinking about jogging with Benson for a couple of miles when he is bit older, bit of killing two birds with one stone as he needs to get fit! :) We were looking at the leads on one of the links which you also use around your waist.
