just asking a question, when we got jasper we always intended to have him neutered, how ever when i went to my vets visit saturday she said at 6 month we will do it, personally i think hes way to young, hes only a baby, any one had this done, if so at what age ??
Re: just asking as any of you had your boys neutered ???? I've had two males, both neutered at 6 to 7 months. The only impact it had was that neither of them ever raised their leg to wee - both wee-ed like girls.
Re: just asking as any of you had your boys neutered ???? jasper dont lift is leg yet,but i dont mind that,n was your 2 boys ok at that age ??
Re: just asking as any of you had your boys neutered ???? I didnt have either of my male dogs neutered, as they were both friendly, unagressive dogs and I never felt the necessity. However, I have to say that although they both normally stuck to me like glue, whenever there was a bitch in season they were both liable to do a runner!!! They would return home hours later, exhausted but gleefully cheerful... Bad boys! I know that having male dogs neutered at around six months is normal, and although I agree with you and it sounds early, it seems that the rationale is that it stops them developing any of the unwanted male characteristics, such as aggression or 'Wanderlust', or trying to mount other dogs. I think for a first-time dog owner, with a big male dog, it is a very sensible option.
Re: just asking as any of you had your boys neutered ???? Hi, i read up on the available evidence on neutering age and spoke to vets. Decided to get brods chopped at seven months. His day care told me had been pestering a young female who was about to come into season ( they required females to be neutered but i think she had been an early developer and owners hadnt realised) and having weighed everything up i just went for it then. He was a woosy soft sack before he got the chop and a woosy soft sack after but his woosiness didnt increase post chop like some folk said it would....he still crouches to wee but in a very Manly way and doesnt lift his leg....
Re: just asking as any of you had your boys neutered ???? We decided not to have Riley done as he didn't exhibit any unwanted, testosterone driven behaviour and he can be a bit of a wet blanket so we were concerned he'd completely turn to jelly if we had him done. We did watch his behaviour carefully though as if he had shown any unwanted behaviour we would have to move quickly before it became learned behaviour. He's met bitches in heat and shown no interest at all although he has tried to mount neutered males occasionally we've just told him off and he stopped. There are some articles on the main site about the pros and cons I think.
Re: just asking as any of you had your boys neutered ???? Lynne, yes, both boys were fine having it done at that age. Obi was with his original family (we didn't get him till 9 months) but there were no complications. Nicolae (our first boy) was fine when we brought him home from the vet though he was a touch sleepy from the anaesthetic. The next day you would not have known a thing had happened - he was racing around and playing just as normal. He really took it in his stride. Neutering is not really a big deal for boy dogs. The reasons we have neutered dogs include the reasons that Karen has mentioned. Plus, we don't want to contribute to bringing unwanted accidental puppies into the world (too many dogs in pounds already etc.). We never intended breeding our dogs (it's something best left to people who are really serious about doing it properly with all the right health checks, in my opinion) so for us it's something we'd always do with any dog or bitch.
Re: just asking as any of you had your boys neutered ???? Lynne , i had Sam done at 10 months old , not because I think its a pre requisite but because he followed a bitch on heat and so this worried me , the thought of him doing a runner . He was just fine although he cried for hours when we got him home , just didnt like being in a confused state at all , but was bouncing back big time by the following day, not altered his character at all , still a soft lumux
Re: just asking as any of you had your boys neutered ???? While on the subject, what do we do when Amy is feeling humpy on our legs? Or my poor 7 year old whole body now she is taller. Lol
Re: just asking as any of you had your boys neutered ???? It is perfectly natural for male and female pups Jade, but not really desirable , the best thing to do is to distract her the minute she starts , a squeaky toy or a ball immediately . If they are allowed to do it, it will become a habit, to say nothing of an embarassement
Re: just asking as any of you had your boys neutered ???? thank you for your replys, ( LOVE THIS SITE ) hthen got his 5 month on sat, he as a 6 monthly visit to the vet next month, so from your advice, i am going to book him to have it done at the end of july , he will be 7 month , thank you all
Re: just asking as any of you had your boys neutered ???? Lynne, Charlie was neutered whilst in the rescue centre at 6 months and he too pees like a girl ;D Good luck. Helen x
Re: just asking as any of you had your boys neutered ???? I always knew that Sam was an oddity , he only started cocking his leg up almost a year after being castrated ;D
Re: just asking as any of you had your boys neutered ???? Interesting. My vet has advised waiting until he has grown a bit more (Digby is now 8 months), unless he starts to show any undesirable behaviours. I don't want to be responsible for him not growing right but I think constantly trying to hump by 10 year olds best mate when they were last round definitely counts as undesirable in the behaviour department. :-[
Re: just asking as any of you had your boys neutered ???? my vet said as soon as he his 6 month old, going to wait untill he his 7 month,so far he as not shown any undesirable behavior from him, ( not yet ) have you got a photo of digby ?
Re: just asking as any of you had your boys neutered ???? need to download some recent photies of my boy - will try and get round to that over next couple of days. so many of my pictures are fairly poor - black dog = not easy to photograph
