    Hi Everyone,

Iv been reading on here ever since we decided to get him and now I thought I would post. He's been at home now for about four hours and he has mainly slept. I feel that bringing home a puppy is like bringing home a newborn baby (although I have never done that!) as I am constantly watching him to make sure he is breathing and worrying at every slight thing like him twitching in his sleep! Lol. He has had a bit to eat but is not interested in the puppy treats I'd bought him, is this normal? Also when awake he hasn't been hugely bouncy, although he was sick when we got him out of the car so perhaps he's just feeling a bit sorry for himself?

Sorry my post is slightly rambly, I'm excited and nervous at the same time lol

Look forward to hearing from you all

    Frankie

Hi Frankie and welcome Murphy, we are Hattie nearly 6 years old and Charlie 2 1/2 years old. Try not to worry about Murphy and enjoy him. He is probably not too interested in treats as he is getting used to you and his new home, he will in time I'm sure. It's also very hot here (where do you live?) so he may have been a little car sick. Enjoy that fact that he is quiet at the moment as it will definitely all change :D We are all here to help so ramble away. Helen xx :D

    Hi Everyone,

Thanks for your replies. I will pop a picture up in a minute.

We are in Wiltshire and it has been so hot today, I think that probably didn't help with his car sickness. He's perked up a bit now and has been playing with me and my fiancé in the garden, and now he's settled nicely on his bed in the living room.

When we have left him on his own in a different room for a couple of minutes he has whimpered so I am not expecting much sleep tonight!

    Frankie x :)

Hi Frankie and Murphy - from Julie and Charlie - nearly 5 months.

O I remember that first day - so exciting and nerve wracking at the same time! Enjoy - the forum is great, it's saved me from a lot of blunders, and helped sort out the ones I didn't avoid.

Photos when you get a chance...

    Hi Frankie and Murphy,
Welcome from me and Lilly - 3 year old black girl.
Awaiting my flight home from 2 weeks in Florida so suffering doggy withdrawal and eagerly awaiting our (hopefully enthusistic) reunion tomorrow.
Also a bit of forum withdrawal too as only read a tiny percentage of the last 2 weeks posts
So many new peeps and puppies I see.

This is a really good forum. I am no expert but there is always someone around on here to give support and advice.

Hi, sounds just like the time I had with Otis, four weeks ago now, he was car sick to, not really interested in treats to much, and slept a lot, and I checked to see he was still breathing too ! Really enjoy this time, they are totally lovely. Otis is now three months, he has really grown, and changed, lots of chewing and mouthing. Its a great bonding time,Otis was and is very snuggly. Im sure you will have great fun, and wonderful time with your new pup. Maggie

    Hi there, welcome!

Rosie was our first dog and at 7 weeks she was a tiny one to bring home. She's a strapping 3.5 month old now and, once a day or two is in, you'll find yours will be settled in no problems I'm sure. Big change but nowhere near as bad as people said it would be!! But plenty hiccups for us on way and this forum has been great to get advice etc.

    Enjoy :))))

Re: Just brought home our first dog, a lab puppy called Murphy

    Hi everyone,

well we made it through the first night, He cried an hour after we settled him and I ended up going down but only speaking to him once he stopped making any noise. I let him out of the crate and he settled down next to me on the floor so I put him back in his crate but then stroked his head until he went to sleep and then shut the crate and crept out!! He then woke again at 3.15 but I knew this time it could have been for a wee as he hadnt been since quarter past 11, so I took him outside and he went straightaway, it was then however that I think I made the mistake of praising him and then he got rather excited so then wouldnt settle again. I tried putting classical music on and he was alright for a bit and then cried again. I then did the same as before and sat next to him and stroked his head until he was asleep and crept away and then he was quite until 5.30.

I dont know whether this sounds like a successful first night or not, and dont know whether to try moving his crate to our room or to persevere with him in the kitchen.

I cant seem to work out how to put pictures on here!!

Thanks everyone, you are all so kind.

    Frankie x

That sounds like a really successful first night :D

Where do you intend for him to sleep when he grows up? Your room or the kitchen? That's where I'd have the crate now.

If you do intend for him to end up in the kitchen then you can still start with the crate in your room (which is where the puppy would probably rather be) but you'll then have to gradually transition to the kitchen which will not be all that easy.

ps. If you haven't read these already, here is a link to Pippa's articles on Rachael, her chocolate Lab puppy. The first articles are about the initial days and nights - might help to normalise the experience a bit :) http://totallygundogs.com/rachaels-journey/

    Hi Frankie,

Hello from me too. How exciting! Can't offer any useful advice as we got our girl, Lady, when she was already 6 months old.

    Good luck and enjoy.

    Hi Frankie, Hi Murphy!
I agree it's like having a newborn baby 'til you get in the swing of things at home.
We have 3 dogs, Alfie a bernese who's 9, Harry springer x GWP and Charlie our newest addition who is a lab x cocker and she's nearly 4 months old.
I've been reading through Pippas blog on her lab puppy Rachael, and I've thoroughly enjoyed it, as well as thinking a few times, phew, so my lot are quite normal then! It's a really good read.
