I may be gone sometime! She's bored to screams but reluctant to move much I think because her elbows are pretty sore at the moment so ends up groaning and moaning. I've taken her collar off 9while I'm around to make sure she doesn't lick the wounds) as she was going nuts trying to scratch her ear. It's supposed to be a 10 minute regime this week but I find that really difficult if she's also taking the opportunity to attend to a few needs. We have a 10 acre field right behind the house and she seems to have to search the whole of it to find the right spot. I gave up last night and let her off the lead as there were no other dogs around just so she could go around in circles finding the right spot. Aaaargh! Then ended up carrying her back as I thought she'd had enough walking. I MUST BE NUTS! ;D
Re: Just off to take Small Black (very sore) Dog for short walk ...... If you arent back in three hours ........................................ Seriously though David , I know that these boundaries are set re exercise post op but I do believe that they are often set with idiots in mind who would not employ common sense and take a post op dog on a long off lead walk , I`m sure Lady will be just fine
Re: Just off to take Small Black (very sore) Dog for short walk ...... Back! Thanks, Kate. Yes I think you are right. No luck with weeing on this trip though so I'll have to keep an eye on her in case .... Also can't really assess how sore she is. She seems to move smoothly but then stops which kinda says she is feeling it. Anyway early days and she will be improving daily. I think maybe today is the worst of it as the anaesthetic will have completely worn off now.
Re: Just off to take Small Black (very sore) Dog for short walk ...... Oh poor Lady, can just imagine you carrying the small black dog! Helen x
Re: Just off to take Small Black (very sore) Dog for short walk ...... Poor Lady, do hope her soreness wears off soon - and that you don't have to carry her too much! Very bad for the back...
Re: Just off to take Small Black (very sore) Dog for short walk ...... Quite a while ago I had an arthroscopy on my knee to sort out quite badly damaged cartilage. First day I thought I'd never walk again (I've always had a low pain threshold ) it got better in leaps and bounds and I was sailing again 4 weeks later. Hopefully Lady will recover just as quickly (and be less of a drama queen) although she may get used to the royal treatment and insist on being carried everywhere ;D
Re: Just off to take Small Black (very sore) Dog for short walk ...... Oh nooooooo! My back won't take it. She's jolly heavy even if only a small Lab at 27kg. ;D She's had some little bits of bone removed too so I expect that nips a bit.
Re: Just off to take Small Black (very sore) Dog for short walk ...... Yup I reckon that would smart a bit. Give the small black dog a cuddle from me
Re: Just off to take Small Black (very sore) Dog for short walk ...... UPDATE: What a nightmare this morning! Although she yelped a bit last night, she's obviously much better this morning. Took her off for her "10 minute" walk and she kept pulling me in the genral direction of our normal morning walk so I tagged along letting her lead. Well when it got to going home WHAT a struggle. She just dug in and said no I want the full walk please. It included pathetic pleading ie sitting and putting paw over lead with ears back. Plain dragging me in the direction she wanted to go and then just obstinate sitting or maybe having a scratch behind the ear which is another Lady delaying tactic. Heal, which is usually pretty good, was not on the menu! Well I had to insist in the end but I was really worried about her pulling. Co-opted Rosemary to come and find me in the end so she could flap her arms and call in the distance. The little "treasure" is having a snooze at my feet right now but obviously on the mend with a vengance this morning. ;D
Re: Just off to take Small Black (very sore) Dog for short walk ...... Oh heck David, what a nightmare it is when " they " think its time for a romp and we cant let them . I`ve heard people say such daft things like " they will know when they have had enough " Hello ? Sorry but they dont, its up to us as their carers, and its a blinkin tough job too , you have my sympathies, but keep hold of the fact that every day that passes is a day closer to her freedom and your sanity
Re: Just off to take Small Black (very sore) Dog for short walk ...... Ah the old paw on the lead pitiful look ploy - naughty small black dog! Hope she's a little bit more chilled this afternoon
Re: Just off to take Small Black (very sore) Dog for short walk ...... Bless you Lady you are a minx ;D x
Re: Just off to take Small Black (very sore) Dog for short walk ...... Don't you just love the way things like 'crate rest' and 'ten minutes only', and 'no steps' trip off a vet's tongue as though it were the smallest thing in the world. When it is actually going to turn your life upside down. Not to mention the bad back you are going to get if your dog weighs much more than a melon. So you have my sympathy David. Hope you can get back to normal soon. There is some truth in that, and I do think vets sometimes err too much on the side of caution. Though I couldn't quite believe my ears when one vet told me I could work my cocker 10 days after an emergency spay after the stitches came out. I suspect she had no idea at all what 'work' actually involves. Pippa
Re: Just off to take Small Black (very sore) Dog for short walk ...... Thanks, guys. Cheered me up! Just got back from another "trial". I think I've worked out a plan. Slow walk to corner of field well away from the footpath. Allow off lead to wee and pooh. Back on lead for slow walk back (with regular stops to register complaints from her Royal Highness). ;D
Re: Just off to take Small Black (very sore) Dog for short walk ...... How is her Royal Highness today, not feeling too hard done by I hope? Helen x
Re: Just off to take Small Black (very sore) Dog for short walk ...... She seems fine thanks, Helen. A bit stiff in the morning when she first gets up and some referred discomfort because she licks her left paw every now and then and shakes it so I think a bit of bruising around the odd nerve in her elbow. She's got 2 brand new plasters on the stitches this morning as the surgical dressings had dropped off. Sainsburys best waterproof just to keep the wet off outside and also make the neat little stitches less attractive to investigate. If there are no dogs around I let her off the lead and she's much happier. Have to keep her close and calm of course. We put her collar on if she's left alone and at night. The latter is a bit disturbing at night though. She turns around and around in her bed every now and again and the crashes and bangs of the collar wakes everyone up! One side effect that's positive is she has stopped barking at people going by in the street. Just not worth the effort I think! ;D
Re: Just off to take Small Black (very sore) Dog for short walk ...... Update. Just called the surgeon and left a message. All not quite right I think. She suddenly got up shaking her left leg and then went off to hide under the dining room table. Got her settled now on her vet bed in front of the fire, but something not quite right. Just need to check with the specialist I think to make sure the odd (bad?) twinge is normal. :'(
Re: Just off to take Small Black (very sore) Dog for short walk ...... Oh dear , I hope all is ok, but think you do right to go with your gut instinct and ask the questions David , hope you get a reply soon .
