Hi all, my 6-year old male black lab just had his right kidney removed and is resting comfortably at home. I'm looking for some aftercare suggestions, and comments from those that had experienced similar surgical procedure. A little history: We had taken him to the vet a few weeks ago because of lethargy and they had discovered, via xray, a large abdominal growth. They performed ultrasound and determined it was close proximity to the right kidney. We were referred to a specialist and after performing CT scan, they determined the growth WAS the right kidney and needed to come out. The left kidney had normal function and the growth hadn't spread elsewhere. At the time of removal the kidney weighed 5lbs, 10x the normal size/weight. Because of it's size, it had fused to other organs on the right side. The surgeon had to be very delicate when separating the tissue from other organs and because of it's close proximity to the major veins in the stomach. The surgery was a success, and after spending 48 hours at the hospital, he was released to us early this morning. Does anyone have any pointers as to how to make him more comfortable? He's not supposed to play/jump for a couple of weeks, until his stitches can be removed. He's currently on codeine and gabapentin for pain management. He's drinking water and is eating (boiled chicken) but is leaking urine/waste probably because of medication he's on... I appreciate all the help I can get. Thanks in advance.
