Molly munches her way through a Kong Extreme in about one month. They split round the 'equator', once they have done so she goes in the side and can devour the contents of a Kong in little over 5 minutes. She's not daft ,my dog. Any suggestions? I always stuff them with softened kibble and freeze them. Perhaps I am over stuffing them. I tried the filled bones you buy from the pet shop, removed the rubbish and stuffed them with soaked kibble. Only trouble was having heard dire warnings about broken teeth and the cost of doggy dentistry I couldn't stand the strain. I give her a Kong when I have my breakfast and supper, this buys me tranquility in which to digest my food. I would like something reusable/recycle able and durable which engages her for sometime. On the up side. I guess the rapid demise of her Kongs does suggest that she is a power chewer. She generally has a gentle mouth and hasn't destroyed our home (except for a little bit of nibbling of the staircase when she was a pup). So I guess I am lucky
Wow,that is some chewing ...if she can actually destroy the rubber then I don't think it matters what you stuff it with ,she's going to get it out....Dex is quite a determined chewer but not as strong as Molly,i push a sea biscuit or sea jerky into the centre of the kong so soaked kibble is packed around that and it seems to slow him down a bit ...I don't know what else to suggest ,I'd definately say stay away from something harder, she sounds like she wouldn't stop so there would be a big danger of broken teeth ....shudder shudder....
I've seen a lot of power chewers destroy a black kong in no time at all at the kennels. One of he major factors however was the age of the kong! Does she break a brand new one, or has she generally had it a while before she breaks it? I know at the kennels when kongs used to get left outside for a while the rubber would get old and more brittle...I wonder if it's the repeated freezings that is breaking it down? Have you contacted the kong company? We emailed them with pictures of a broken black kong and got a free replacement. Obviously not a long term solution though!
Have you tried the Kong wobblers instead? A different concept, but Benson doesn't chew these just bashes them around for ages until he get the kibble out
Wow - a month! I have just thrown out Charlie's collection of kongs and bought new ones as just about every one was splitting. But that's after a least a year's use for each one and repeated stuffing, freezing and dishwasher cycles. Mind, I did throw out about 10, so I suppose that works out not far off one a month...but they weren't kong extremes. I'd say avoid hard things, for sure. Have you tried her on a small bit of good quality rawhide? I don't give it to Charlie these days, but only because the brand changed and it seems to upset his tum, but it bought me a good 15mins peace time to time.
Yes these are great ,you have to tune out the noise though I think that is part of the enjoyment for Dexter though! Your woodwork can take a bashing too and our once landed smack in the middle of the coffee table when we had visitors sending glasses and snacks flying ......he was very pleased with himself!
I just bought 4 xl Kong extremes. I thought I'd see how she fared with a bigger one. It does give me extra peace There was a good deal on them at PAH. I got 4 delivered for £30 which sort of decided me to give it a go.
Even if she eats through them in a month, that works out at 25p a day in kongs. 12.5p per mealtime of peace. I think I'd pay that....
