Hello I have a 9 month old chocolate lab but is a garbage eater when we go for walks. She eats everything from duck poop, to paper, to even cigarette butts. She is the worse with cigarette butts it’s the joke she only like the menthol ones. Sometimes it’s too small that she swallows it before I can get it off of her. Help what can I do to stop her from eating junk on walks. I work with leave it in the home but can’t get it correlate outside.
My Willow is the same I have a treat and ask her drop what is in her mouth she drops said stone leaf fag butt ect she doesn't swallow them now but gets board and drops it naturally. She likes to feel something in her mouth. She drop the object has the trest then tries to get the object back straight after. I am teaching her to heel and this has stopped her focusing on things on the ground and more on me. She tends to pick stuff up off the ground when she is in a playful mood I am hoping she will grow out of it soon she is 17 weeks.
Hi @Sschiebe Welcome to the forum. I'm curious about your user name Your user name seems to be an extension of the verb schieben to move/slide. First of all, you need to stop trying to take things out of her mouth. It will encourage her to swallow everything because only that step will prevent you from taking her prize. In future have really high value treats and use them to exchange for what she has in her mouth. Practice in your house first with a ball. Practice leave it in lounge room. Then the kitchen. Then the backyard. Then front drive. Use high value treats to reward her when she leaves objects. Then move to objects other than balls. Practice the skill with a large range of objects in different locations.
