Hi All, I took my 8 mth old Lab to the Vet due to snorting/sneezing, She checked her out and said it was probably more likely to be an allergy.. I was thinking it was something up her nose.. anyway have been giving her antihistamine tablets now for a week and no change. Have any of you guys had anything similar or ideas? Thanks Tom

I'm no vet but my understanding was that allergies usually involve itching, red eyes and chewing legs/feet in dogs, not usually sneezing. Now, that doesn't mean it's not an allergy...

Antihistamines can take a while to work, so if your vet is sure it's an allergy then I'd keep going with what you have been given. But sometimes anithistamines don't work, even for an allergy....or some work better than others so you have to try a few, each for a few weeks. It's a bit of a case of trial and error. I would say that if you have seen no change after two more weeks, definitely see the vet again.

Is he doing anything else like scratching a lot, or chewing his legs? Do his eyes look red? How often his he snorting or sneezing? Is he pawing at his face at all?

My Sam had this last summer, a proper sneezing fit that went on for days , my Vet looked up Sams nose, there was nothing there, he gave me nasal drops for him and it cleared, I think it was pollen :)

Sally does scratch her hind qtrs. a fair bit and her ears, and she def. has no fleas as I've checked and she is right up to date with her flea/worm treatments

Well.....I have a theory....there is just SO much pollen around me just now I think it is the total bulk that is irritating me (my eyes particularly)
You can reduce the irritation in humans by doing things like tying long hair back, wearing sunglasses, and showering after being out - the latter may be worth considering if you have allergic dogs, but can't see the former method being a winner - Ludo may manage though ;D

If Sally is scratching a lot too then it really does sound like an allergy.

Eventually the thing that's causing it will go away....I hope that's soon!

What sort of antihistamine has the vet put her on? Might be worth chatting to the vet about a nasal spray of the kind Kate mentioned?

that is "Piriton" or chlorpheniramine - tablets for humans are normally 4mg
As Annabelle will attest, much cheaper buying the human version than the doggy one

    Thanks :

Is she breaking the skin at all? Any bleeding anywhere?

Unless she's breaking skin (in which case I'd see the vet again) I would give it a try for another week and if it's not having any effect try something else, after discussion with the vet. My dog takes Zyrtec tablets (just the human variety) for an allergy (has also been on steroids at times which are really effective). He has two tablets each morning. Not all kinds work for all dogs though unfortunately.

Hi, thanks for the replies. No there is no broken skin or bleeding. The only thing that's maybe a little different is she's not eating anywhere near as much, probably just being fussy, I wouldn't think its teething as she is 8mths old now and seems to have all her adult teeth.
