Taking Lady to see the vet this evening, and don't think there is much wrong with her as she's still hooning around especially after she fell into a ditch this morning and had to both swim and not look silly at the same time! She was sick after both meals on Saturday plus has mucky eyes. Seemed fine yesterday and ate everything put in front of her and eyes seemed better. However, today she hasn't been sick but refused her usual kibble diet which is distinctly odd as she usually eats like it's her first ever meal. Tried her on some wet meat-based dog food and she woofed that without it coming back so gave her a bit more a couple of hours later with some kibble. She woofed the meat but left the kibble. Eyes mucky again but not inflamed. Seems quite perky and up for a game. Anyway seeing the vet tonight as not happy about her.
Re: Labrador off her food - shock horror! I think you have to go with instinct David , we know our dogs so well and pick up on things that others may not see , hoping that all is well with Lady later on x
Re: Labrador off her food - shock horror! How odd, hope she's ok x Riley has refused his kibble this morning too and has been out eating grass but he's always been picky. Maybe he's out in sympathy......small black dogs together!!!
Re: Labrador off her food - shock horror! Poor Lady - good sign she ate the wet stuff, and no sicking up either. Fingers crossed she picks up x
Re: Labrador off her food - shock horror! Yes thanks. Probably nothing, but I think a quick check to make sure woudn't be wrong.
Re: Labrador off her food - shock horror! Poor lady. Hope she feels better soon. It's better to go to the vet then keep worrying and wondering if you should or not. Fingers crossed Jen
Re: Labrador off her food - shock horror! Hope she feels better soon and that its nothing too bad. If she is wolfing down wet food but not kibble sould her teeth or mouth be a problem, as wet food is softer and does not need to be chewed
Re: Labrador off her food - shock horror! Thanks all, and no not teeth, Annabelle. They are all fine, but I expect the vet will check. I'll mention it.
Re: Labrador off her food - shock horror! Just a thought David but could the kibble be off or have gotten damp? This happened to me and Hattie blankly refused to eat it, I had to go begging to my friend for a bowl of her dogs kibble which she ate no problem. Dogs are pretty sensitive
Re: Labrador off her food - shock horror! I had a kibble problem too - it went off. It's a good suggestion from Helen to check the kibble. I bought a big bag (much cheaper). Across the top of the bag was written 37 days - that is, there was enough food in the bag for 37 days. Anyway what with Charlie being on half rations, the bag lasted much long that 37 days - nearly 60. As I got to the end of the bag, the kibble was off. There were specks of mildew in the middle of the kibble. Checking storage instructions, bags should be used within a month (so why advertise 37 days!), kibble kept in the bag, airtight seal, and in dry, cool place etc. I now buy smaller (and more expensive) bags.
Re: Labrador off her food - shock horror! Best to get her checked out ,hope it's nothing to worrisome x
Re: Labrador off her food - shock horror! Bingo! You are both correct about the kibble, I think. It's a new bag and she got sick after the first meal from it. Just smelt it and it's not exactly bad, just a bit musty. I keep the food in a bin but I've still got the bag. Best before date is 14/12/14 so no problem with that. Maybe it was stored in a damp place. Anyway not taking any chances and just ordered fresh supplies direct from Burns and Lady can have pouched dog food for a couple of days until it arrives. Having refused the kibble today she perked up around mid-afternoon and I took her out across the flooded fields where the Eden Brook is flowing quite fast through the meadows. She went off hooning like mad so I conluded she's recovered (slightly loose pooh) and that the mucky eye isn't related. Rang the vet to cancel and said I'd rebook if there is any doubt. Got drops for the eye. (as a secondary observation, her legs are about the same length as the safe wading depth of my Muck Boots. So if her body is clear of the water I know I can get through with dry feet. 8) )
Re: Labrador off her food - shock horror! Thats good news David! Well spotted you guys - has made me think about our food - will keep an eye on it as we also but big bags that last more than a month. I have Seeley Lady Estate boots that aren't full length so I have to carefully judge flooding risk
Re: Labrador off her food - shock horror! Oh that's good news and no vets fees incurred. Yes that musty smell puts dogs right off. x
Re: Labrador off her food - shock horror! Ok I think this confirms it - just fed her a couple of pouches of wet food and she went at it "like a dog at broth" as my mother would have said. Licked the empty bowl twice and then came back again to make sure it was empty. She'd been following me around each time I went through to the utility room where her food is kept so she was clearly hungry. Assuming this meal stays inside I think mystery illness has been solved. Have to go out for emergency rations tomorrow first thing!
Re: Labrador off her food - shock horror! My young Lab Rourke has refused to eat today, first time ever , no sickness or diarrhoea, so a mystery. I hope the bag is OK as it is expensive, smells fine, though I do have a bag in the damp garage, better get that bag into the house! Aren't dogs a worry.
