Hi i have a 9 year old black labrador that is getting stomach pains on a fairly regular basis ie a couple of times a week. She has a sensitive stomach and so is on special food recommended by the vet, but she gets bouts of a noisy stomach that is obviously causing her a lot of pain. She doesn't want to eat or go for a walk, she pants a lot and wants to crawl into a dark space. We have been trying to keep a diary to see if we can identify something when she gets the problem, but as yet we haven't been able to identify anything. The vet says she has IBS and to give her a Buscopan when it starts but this doesn't stop her getting it and its distressing to see her in so much pain. Has anyone else's dog experienced anything similar and can recommend anything that has helped?
Hi Carolyn, Welcome to the forum. I'm so sorry to hear your dog has been having these problems. A diary sounds like a very sensible idea. I don't have any personal experience of this, but I think if she seems in distress and you aren't happy with the vet's diagnosis then there is no harm in getting a second opinion from another vet or taking her back to be checked over again. Do let us know how she gets along! Fingers crossed it clears up soon.
Hi our previous lab suffered with this all her life and had a very noisy gurgly tum, she was also on vet's food, if it was very noisy we collected some "pro-kolin" paste from our vet to settle it,this seemed to help our girl. Hope this may help with your girl
Hi Carolyn. I also have a 9 yr old with stomach/bowel problems. Lucan was diagnosed with Inflammatory Bowel Disease a few years ago. He's on a special veterinary diet and daily Ranitidine to stop excess acid, but still has occasional bouts of stomach pain and the gurgles. I would also suggest going back to the vet or getting a second opinion, perhaps it's time to run some tests. Apart from the pain episodes does she suffer with any vomiting, diarrhea, excessive eating of grass, odd coloured stools, anything unusual?
Zeke had the loud gurgling and extremely smelly gas with runny poop for most of his life. He is 2. We tried different foods over 18 months and finally figured out his allergy ws fish. And they put fish meal in a lot of things for dogs which I never realized until we started reading labels. Good luck with the food diary. I hope you can find the cause soon.
Is she eating grass or raw veg if she has bowel problems she could have a bowel obstruction. My Spaniel had a tumor that pressed on her bowel and if she ate grass she would get stomach pains. I have a stricture and get the same problems I don't eat grass lol but lots of foid are out. Dogs can get autoimmune disease and crohns is one of them
