My 8 month old black lab developed pink patches in her mouth and round her muzzle about 3 weeks ago and they are spreading. The vet says it is vitiligo but couldn’t offer any help. I read on the internet that it can be hereditary or an immune response triggered by environmental factors (eg allergic response to plastic). An old thread on another forum suggested treating with vitamin supplements and melatonin but the owner didn’t report back whether this regime managed to halt/reverse the condition. Has anyone got any experiences to share?

    Hi Sarah,

    Welcome to the forum :)

It looks like you've stumped us!

This recent article about vitiligo in dogs, cats and horses might have some useful insights for you - it's written for the veterinary community so some of it is a little complicated to follow in places, but it has a section on the outcomes of various treatment trials.

It concludes that since the problem is cosmetic, the possible side effects of treatment rarely justify pursing it, unless you want to show your dog.
