I wonder if anyone knows anything about lead etiquette. When Hattie is off lead and we meet other dog owners some of them put their dogs back on lead and others don't. Am I missing something here as I don't? :-\
Re: Lead Etiquette If someone else has their dog on a lead, I'll recall mine and put them on. If someone else sees mine off lead and rapidly puts their dog on a lead, I'll call mine back too and clip them on if we are going to be passing them close by (I'll call them to heel if we can pass at a greater distance). I always work on the principle that if their dog is on a lead, then it is on the lead for a reason and I should respect that. How other people operate and what the recognised etiquette is, I have no idea! Clare
Re: Lead Etiquette Not sure about etiquette but I think the same as Claire, if someone's dog is on lead then its for a reason and I recall mine and either put them on lead too or heel walk past. I have been on the other end of off lead dogs charging up to mine when they are on lead and it really bugs me, mainly because I had cuilli on lead for a reason when we saw off lead dogs for a while, when she was going through her big dog fear period, she was ok on lead seeing strange dogs but not ok if the dog dog ran up to her. So I just presume now that dog on lead means mine dont go near...its also a right pain if an off lead dog runs up to yours on lead as you get all the lead tangling going on.. .if my two are off lead and another dog is off lead I dont let them just charge up too see it if I dont know the dog. I get them to walk by me ( or stick em on lead) and ask the owner if its ok if the meet up. But i live in a city with a fair amount of unfriendly dogs and quite a few recent dog bite incidents so Im a bit more careful than I used to be in off lead situations...
Re: Lead Etiquette I'm not aware of any etiquette. Like ClareJ, I assume that other owners usually have a good reason for putting their dog on a lead so we clip Holly until we know the situation. Sometimes there's a good reason, for example an elderly, unsocialised or ill-tempered dog, or maybe a bitch in season. Other times the owner might not be sure of the situation and just wants to keep the dog under control. We always clip Holly if we see joggers coming as she seems to derive a fiendish pleasure from chasing them.

Re: Lead Etiquette I do much as Debsie, in London - well, we're on lead all the time now, but before. Charlie doesn't get to charge up to other off lead dogs unless I've made a mistake. Because they might not be friendly, because they might be training, and so on. I'm afraid in particular we go to some lengths to avoid all terriers that we don't know. Plus, Charlie is big and bouncy, and I don't think it's ok for him to bounce round a very small puppy or very old dog. If we want to play in London, we can find friendly dogs that we know on the common, otherwise we pretty much train - on and off lead - to pass other dogs without interaction.
Re: Lead Etiquette I do the same as most people on here.....if I see a dog on a lead I always get Harley to heel until I ask the other owner if she can say hello. I always respect their wishes and have been training Harley that she cannot always play with every dog she sees. I am lucky that I see a lot of the same owners and dogs most days in our local park/field and most stay away if they can see I am training and vice versa.
Re: Lead Etiquette The same as clare here too. I always take it as an indication that I'm to keep reuben away. I only latch him when we are approaching a carpark, when there are elderly people, very young toddlers or cyclists. He doesn't really show interest in other dogs and seldom goes up to them anyway. Also his recalls very good.
