We were shown by one trainer to send a kind of little vibration or wave down the lead, to get back the dog's attention if it's wandering or to indicate that a change of direction or other command might be coming soon. Is that it do you think? It's a bit like what you do to get a horse to change to a quicker pace when you're 'long-lining' - kind of 'sending energy' down the line. If it is that, I wouldn't imagine it was cruel. Might be something else entirely though- what was the context?

Hi Kath, just reading Lez Grahams The Pet Gundog and there is a section on loose lead walking and she describes lead flicking which as she puts it imagine you are flicking a paint brush ???

Phenomenally unhelpful imagery that, isn't it?? I guess it could be what I described?

Ooooh, no, it is the same!! (Just acting it out on the way to the kitchen!) You know how you normally have the end of the lead in your right hand, and the support the loop with your left? You release the left hand and move the right hand to the centre of your body, then do a little flicky thing to send a tiny 'wave' down the lead....I think!

Luckily nobody saw me ! ;)

Yes, I have to say that although I seem to know what it is, I didn't actually find it particularly useful. Maybe I wasn't doing it right?? ;D

    Re: Lead Flicking

I was told to slap my dog on the bum with the other end of the lead if she was moving out of position.

    That wasn't really for me!

From the sound of it, this ripple down the lead thing is to mentally wake your dog up, am i right? as in to get them to focus. i don't understand the rippling paint brush thingy which lead my mind to remember the slapping bottom thing (not my own bottom you understand).

if so, i have a clicking noise at the roof of my mouth which does the same thing. that clicking noise gets them to focus on me off lead or on it. it was very useful with eevee dog when she was nervous and it still helps as she's a bit flighty round rustles in bushes etc. i reward a response to the noise so it is very firmly implanted and they will wake up for it even.

have i missed the point? i feel i have but in case this is relevant i've pressed post anyway. feel free to ignore the loon

Mmm, I would imagine that slapping a dog with the lead would just produce a dog who leaps smartly out of the way if you twitch your hand :(

The ripple for attention thing sounds more in keeping with Lez Graham from what I can gather about her. Haven't read the book, although I'm thinking I might have to get it now- have you found it useful?
