This is another issue I forgot to mention in my other thread. So Oakley our now 12 week old black lab chews his leash, at first when we started using the leash, he would simply pick up some of it and hold it in his mouth and walk like that, it was cute at the time but he was NOT chewing on it at this time. Now he is chewing on it. How do you get them not to do this? A harness of some sort? We are in training classes and I'm hoping we will eventually learn this but I need advise now since we take him on daily walks. He chewed through a brand new $35 leash we bought him yesterday. There was nothing we could do because we were out on the walk and couldn't take him off leash. Any ideas?
I used a clicker to teach Ziggy not to chew his. It was almost instantly effective. Only very rarely chomps it now when he's pissed at me
I would be walking him on a harness as it will be harder for him to reach the lead. I would also be training him to walk nicely with treats which will also distract him. A harness is much better until they can walk without pulling at all as it can help protect their throat.
One of the trainers had me grasp the lead on each side when it was in her mouth and then look the other way and prevent playing or tugging with a firm grip on the lead. Worked like a charm.
