Finally I have just got around to making liver cake but I'm not sure what the consistency should be like when it's been blended. I'm no cook but it was a bit stretchy and is taking ages to cook. Is this correct? I have a feeling it's going to be inside the bin instead of the dogs Thanks x
I bet the dogs will like it whatever the consistency! I've taken to giving it 20 minutes at 180 and then another 20 minutes at 160 , until a knife inserted comes out clean. The consistency of mine before cooking is something between a thick batter and a soft cake consistency, but I do sometimes add a drop of water to the blender if it's not blending well. When cooked It comes out looking like a wholemeal loaf. Good luck!
Mine wasn't at all like a batter or cake mixture and I added some milk. It's just come out of the oven and it does look like a wholemeal loaf so I suppose that's good enough. Strangely there's not much of a smell from it, I was expecting it to stink! Thanks Joy x
Just cut the "liver cake" up and it has lots of air pockets, is that because I used SR Flour? It's not dense at all and is more like bread so I think it may crumble when defrosted. I'm not sure it's going to be a deal breaker for Hattie & Charlie. What a waste of time
I use self raising flour too. It's a shame if they don't like it, but all dogs are different - for Molly it's her absolute favourite.
Oh thanks Joy, I have cut it into small cubes frozen it and will give it a go on our walk tomorrow, I'm sure they'll eat it, their dogs afterall x It's so cheap to make and you get loads out of a batch
Well, Hattie was super keen but then it's food Charlie ate it but wasn't blown away, so a mixed verdict and not sure I would go to the bother of making it again x
I used to make it, but now I'm lazy and I just chuck a few whole pig livers into the oven to cook, then cut those into small chunks. It's a lot easier, requires less washing up and the dogs love it
You could, I suppose, but they're far more expensive than pig liver, and chicken livers go in my belly, not the dogs'
I got 500g for £1 I wouldn't touch them with a bardge pole but thought I could use them for the dogs but are they as pungent as pigs liver?
No, nowhere near. They're a lot more fragile, so they may break up when cooked, I'm not sure. Worth a go, and you can always add them to their bowls if they're no good for treats. I don't know about there, but over here, you often get hears with chicken livers, and they're perfect for treats, too, because they're a lot more rubbery texture.
