We just adopted our black lab Shirley who is estimated to be 4yrs old. She's fantastic and we love her so much already after only three weeks. Well....we left to run an errand and when we came back she had counter-surfed and helped herself to a loaf of bread I had in the plastic baggie along with the sliced bread I had in a ziplock freezer bag. Half of the ziplock was gone. We called the emergency vet after a few hours of worrying and they said we had waited to long to induce vomiting. This was Sunday. She seems normal, still eating, drinking, playing, barking at strangers, etc....she pooped yesterday but I could only find a few pieces of plastic in the poo. I've been giving her pumpkin with meals. When can I stop worrying? What a horrible lesson to learn that we can not have ANYTHING on the counters anymore. My previous black lab really wasn't much of a surfer unless unwrapped food was there for the taking.

    Always a worry!
If she is eating drinking and pooping normally, as well as behaving normally I wouldn't worry too much.
She still might vomit the bag up, or pass it, but might take up to 10 days??
Others have more experience of this, eh Tatze? :D @Boogie
Silicone cupcake cases have been known to take months

Welcome to the World of Counter Surfers. Tilly is a Gold Medalist. Two loves of French Bread at one time. A whole 12 Pack of English Muffins. A big (expensive)loaf of whole grain bread. The list goes on. None of it has ever caused a problem. She sometimes chews up the plastic and some times just shreds it and leaves it. Keep and eye on her, but it probably will not cause any problems.

Cooper sits back and watches with an "I didn't do it" Look.

It’s such a difficult time watching and waiting.

Tatze once ate a lead (whole!) and threw it up ten days later!:rolleyes:

Any lethargy or anything else that concerns you and phone the Vet.

I get complacent occasionally and she’ll eat something else. I don’t think we’ll ever completely without worry with this one!

A whole loaf of bread? Keep a close watch. That bread isn't going to digest at all if it's well sealed in the bag and you could end up with a blockage. Hopefully she tore the bag open when she ate it but watch anyway.

Some malicious fool dumped a freezer of meat wrapped in freezer bags and Oban ate some. He barfed up one whole large freezer bag that night and pooped another one out two days later. HOWEVER, both bags were broken and I suspect broken when he ate them as I saw many that were broken. Each bag had a small amount of meat in it. And he rolled in the stuff too, OMG, what a smell.

I can't imagine a dog managing to eat a loaf of bread without tearing the bag open. When Tilly gets into something like that she shreds the bag. She mostly does not eat the plastic, though I'm sure she gets some of it. So far it has never caused a problem except for her waist line. We are trying to slim her down a bit and she thinks it is a bad idea.
