I have had a couple of people tell me that Murphy is quite skinny, and wondered what you all thought? image by Fwhitt246, on Flickr image by Fwhitt246, on Flickr image by Fwhitt246, on Flickr
Re: Look skinny? I've had the same said many times Frankie....Murphy IS very slight, but Dexter is small built and has looked like Murphy.he's bulkier now,but he's 20 months and very muscly.in the last couple of months a lot has changed, his head is bigger, his shoulders have grown.....he's lost his puppyhood and become an adult.I'm going to ask you how heavy Murphy is now but it's not the most pertinent point as we know from all the times we have 'forum discussed' weight and also, remind me how old he is? Dex is 23" / 59 cms from his shoulder to his toe ( I think that's the measurement you use) he was always 22.5kgs...both his parents were small, lean working line dogs.my vet has always wanted him to be 2 kgs heavier but respected my caution in not wanting him to get too heavy especially after his neuter.,when she says they can be prone to gain weight. In March we had a run of upset tums and vomiting ( these are never far away....although I've noticed a big improvement recently, touching wood)and he lost weight and looked really skinny, even to me :-[..so I resolved to build him up a bit ( to give us some credit for the days when we just have rice and chicken )I have got him to 24.8 kgs now....I monitor him daily now though,we are back weighing food and really taking training treats/ kongs back into consideration....I digress from your question ,I'm sorry .....if I'm honest Dexter looks better these couple of kilos heavier, but I think he would have looked chubby as an adolescent at this weight ??? When Dex was 22.5 kgs ....you could see his ribs if he stood like Murphy...you can't see Murphy's ribs but he looked exactly the same as Murphy on the above view photo...... I go back to my original ( inexperienced :)assessment, Murphy is slight not skinny...but I wouldn't let him be any lighter.... I think he's a lovely dog and I bet he has the speed and agility of a racehorse ;D
Re: Look skinny? He is slim, not thin Sam was quite skinny as a youngster , it worried me at times because he is a big boned and tall dog so he looked really thin to me . However, our Vet said No , he is fine , far better to have a slim dog , less stress on joints etc. when they get older . Sam is almost three years old and 38 kilos, but its all bone and muscle, still not much fat on him so dont worry, as long as he is healthy and fit, thats all that matters
Re: Look skinny? How old is Murphy? He does not look thin, just has not any weight on him. Healthy labs are slim.
Re: Look skinny? Frankie this is him asleep tonight which is really what he looks like now standing ,his ribs are covered but I can feel them easily and he has a bit more of a 'tuck' image by dexterpops02, on Flickr I posted a photo earlier on the photo section of him on a funny position but how he looks is what his waist looks like from above.... Sorry,I always get into these posts quite deeply because I really feel like I justify Dexters build in public in Dubai all the time people don't hold back in saying what they think and I would never say to them,'your lab is fat,'but they tell me Dexter is skinny all the time and I used to really worry ......so if I can help alleviate anyone's worries I get on a roll! ;D
Re: Look skinny? Thanks guys. He is 1 on sunday. Last time he was weighed which i think was about 6 weeks ago he was 26.5kg. Yea i agree that i wouldnt let him get any smaller but it bugs me when people say that hes skinny. I can feel his ribs and his spine on the top of his back when i stroke him..
Re: Look skinny? Otis is 13 months old now, and 20.4 kg, I worried that he was to thin, but he is fine, just about right, not carrying any excess. I think Angela has answerd your question, and going by the photo, Murphy looks fine. Angela, Dex is looking great, Maggie xx
Re: Look skinny? I would say he's okay, but you wouldn't want him any thinner. Simba was looking like that, too, I thought he was verging on too skinny, I could feel his ribs and backbone too. I've upped his rations a bit (oh the joy) and I think he looks just right now. A lot of it is by feel and look, rather than by weight.
Re: Look skinny? He is very slim and personally I would want to bump him up to 27kg and see how he looks then. I can understand why people say he's too skinny as he's the sort of colour people don't expect to see slim Labradors. In my experience it's the black labs that tend to be thought of as the slim ones (though I know that's not always the case). I certainly have never seen a slim yellow lab. They've always be chunky show types and/or overweight. Sadly this is becoming the norm now and people don't seem to recognise a Labrador at a healthy weight!
Re: Look skinny? I don't think he is too thin - he looks quite slightly built though, and on that build, I don't think you want any weight. The weight should be in proportion to the build. My boy is from show lines, standard height, moderately chunky, with much, much, thicker legs, a much bigger rib cage, and and overall a much bigger build. Plus he is 4 months older than Murphey. He weighs only 1kg more. And is not too thin.
Re: Look skinny?
I would say he's okay, but you wouldn't want him any thinner.
I agree with Lisa and Penny. Okay, but he hasn't got any leeway there. If you can feel his backbone without much pressure then maybe a little bit more weight on him wouldn't hurt.
Re: Look skinny? I agree that i definately wouldnt want him any thinner. My oh at this very moment is feeding him crusts off his toast with jam on! Lol. I think i might go back to giving him a small lunch and see if that fills him out a little. I might go and weigh him tomorrow, il let you know what it says
Re: Look skinny? i took milly to the vets last week as i think she looks thin she is 11months and the vet said she is absoultly fine it is better to be slim than be overwieght she did say try giving her a small amount of food midday and see if that help her fill out a little but she is still growing so dont worry about yours i am sure he is fine looks ok
Re: Look skinny? I won't add a lengthy agreement to what's already written but say Riley has been very similar and as a result when he was poorly he definitely tipped the thin side of slim. I added sardines to his meals as he struggled to take on any more kibble and started leaving it. His backbone was my indicator, when he was too light it was easily felt, now he's about right it's slightly covered
