    Hi everyone,

this is my first post on this forum. I have a 6-month-old yellow Lab called Leo. He is fantastic and the whole family love him to bits.

I am a bit worried about his poos. Three weeks ago Leo got sickness and diarrhea and he had to stay at the vets over night on a drip. He got meds and he was better within days. We changed his food from Beta to Eukanuba as the vet suggested he might not be too happy with fillers and grain. However, since this illness his stools haven't really gone back to the normal solid ones. What he does now is soft (not diarrhea). He had a few solid morning poos but during the day he does soft ones.
We are very carefull what he gets to eat as a treat and also with his chewey toys. We also have a cat, but her food is kept away from the dog.
Apart from that he is a happy, bouncy puppy with lots of energy and big appetite.

Any suggestions? Vet wasnt that worried, but I somehow think his poos should be more solid. I dont know. He is our first dog.

    Jo

    Hi and welcome :)

Did you do a slow change over with his food? It should take 5-7 days to change from one food to another or it can unsettle their tummies.
My pup who is 7 months old had loose stools and we found Royal Canin Gastro Intestinal brilliant as it is for sensitive tummies. We have had quite a few bouts of sickness and diarrhoea.
Also, how much are you feeding? as sometimes if they have too much this can also change their stools. I don't feed the recommended amount on the bag as Harley finds this too much. We feed about 85% of the recommended amount.

    Hope this helps ;)

I would suggest the same as Naya.

It could be you are feeding more than he needs especially if his first bowel movement of the day is firm and they then go softer.

It's difficult with puppies though because they are growing so do need the right amount of food.

    Good luck

    Jen :D

    Hi Jo
    Welcome to the forum :)
Another thought might be has he knocked out all his good bacteria? Probably a bit past the event now, and more likely to be the food changeover, but might be worth considering giving some live/probiotic yoghurt to see if it helps? If not, he'll love you for it anyway.

Hello! Welcome to the forum from me and my boy Charlie.

Charlie had a bad tummy bug at Christmas. It took ages for his poo to return to normal, and was thinking to change his diet (I will, but later now). It's only just got completely back to normal now (2 months after) - although, he's also had a quite a few drugs, so that might not have helped the poo normality situation.

    Thank you all.

Yes, we introduced the food gradually over a week.
I will try the yogurt too.

    Thanks!

Hi Joanna, and welcome to the forum.

Great advice above, hope your puppy's tum settles down soon.

    Welcome Jo :)

We had quite a few sensitive tummy issues when Riley was around 6 months too and he continues to be a sensitive boy rather than a cast iron stomached lab. Used all the advice above too....he's now on a rice based food rather than wheat and if he has an episode we generally starve him for 24 hours(less may be more appropriate for a younger dog though) and use probiotic yoghurt, chicken and rice to get him back on an even keel. It can take a while though. As long as he's drinking normally try not to worry he should come right.
