During last weeks puppy class, the trainer asked us to bring cheese as treats which we did and the next day Dexter had an upset belly, he woke us at 3am and had a bout of diarrhoea in the garden so we cut the cheese just in case this was the cause and we cut all treats just kept to kibble. His bowels returned to normal however for the last 3 days we have had soft poo turning into diarrhoea and more waking us in the night (once per night) to dash into the garden, this morning was just water coming out. Surely this isn't just a reaction to the cheese still?
Yesterday we tried going do to 3 meals a day, maybe that didn't help?
He eats well drinks well and is still very playful and seems himself completely, we checked his gums he doesn't seem dehydrated or anything. Not sure whether to call the vets or if this is normal pupp diarrhoea.
Tomorrows puppy class will have to be just kibble treats-I hope he still listens with some lower value treats!

Pups have very sensitive tummies and will produce copious amounts of diahorrea at the drop of a hat (or small cube of cheese). Cheese is very rich, perhaps smaller cubes would be a better idea.

You could try him on chicken and rice which most puppy tums will tolerate. If it doesn't settle down soon a trip to the Vets is necessary.

I shouldn't worry about only using kibble for training. Initially I only used kibble and I still got her attention. I now add in something tasty, like chicken, if I want her to think that I am really special and well worth paying attention to.

    Hi there ,
My Dexter was VERY easily upset tummy wise when he first came to us.....we did have a couple of factors but his diet was part of the problem.I had to cut everything out except kibble for our first set of obedience classes and unfortunately unlike Molly , I had a bit of a nightmare......Whilst everyone tried to practice the requested excercises,Dexter demonstrated how effectively he could 'swim' across the room in an effort to get everyone else's higher value treats....practicing 'leave it' and loose lead walking was a joy....not! but I'm not telling you that to make you apprehensive about your class. If you think you might have trouble with attention hers a couple of things that might help......
I wish I'd have wet my kibble a little,it's smellier ,and more palatable..( because they start coughing it back up once you've been there a little while). I also read a suggestion the other day to member who was facing an obedience exam and not allowed to use food I think it was Mags that suggested rubbing something wow on your fingersit could have the same effect as a tasty food treat.By wow I'm talking sardines ,salmon mousse,sausage.....if I'd have thought of that I'd have kept Dexter attention much better...I guess he would still be getting a touch of rich food but literally it would have been the smell of it on my finger... please don't think I'm negative ,I really hope it's great for you ,this was just a bit of prewarning so save you from a bit of what I had! Once Dexter's tummy troubles were over I was able to use steamed and roast chicken ( skin removed ) ....he's 3 now so he will focus for kibble mainly now....with a fish4dogs treat pulled out every so often to give him a nice surprise! Let me know how you get on in class ,good luck x

In case it helps... One of the times Ella had a bad stomach it took 3-4 days from eating to diarrhoea. Hope Dexter feels better soon ☺

Thanks guys, your messages really put my mind at rest. This morning his stomach seems to have settled. I am going to try some smelly salmon on my finger for his class tonight and see how it goes, will mostly use kibble with some roast chicken too hopefully his sensitive little belly will be okay!!

    Thanks again everyone
