Took Lucan to the vet this morning for a check over. He's had an intermittent cough which seems to occur every six weeks, give or take a week or two. It sounds a bit like a KC cough, only lasts a few hours to a couple of days but this has been going on for at least a couple of years now and after quite a bad bout on Sunday I decided it was time to find out what's going on.

I was a bit apprehensive as he was booked in to see a male vet (he's much better with females), he was very wriggly but eventually let the vet listen to his chest and feel his throat/windpipe which immediately brought on the hacking cough for a couple of minutes. There are several possibilities ranging from lung damage (very bad dose of KC as a young pup), asthma, allergies to inflammation so he has booked him in to be scoped and x-rayed next Tuesday.

I'm not too worried at the moment as he's otherwise very fit, hasn't lost or put on weight, has a nice shiny coat and has no problems exercising. Fingers crossed it'll be something easily fixed or explained .

Hope the tests will give you an answer and that it's something either easily managed or dealt with. Glad to hear everything else is okay, that's got to be a good sign. :)

Lucan's had his endoscopy, bronchoalveolar lavage and X-rays. I spoke to the vet when I picked him up at 6pm, he has considerable inflammation throughout both lungs and X-rays are showing changes. Only good news is that he didn't see anything nasty and described it as healthy looking inflammation. Samples have been sent off to the lab and hopefully results will be back by Friday so should know more then, at the moment he's thinking asthma.......

I have a very clingy, whinging dog here at the moment, hopefully he'll settle down and sleep it off soon.

Aw poor Lucan, really hope the results will be good on Friday. I didn't know dogs could get asthma. Lots of cuddles prescribed to help xx

Poor Lucan. I didnt know dogs could get asthma either.

At least with the tests you will know what it is and he can get treatment. As you said he was fine in himself and seemed healthy before apart from the cough imagine how much better he will be once he gets treatment.
    :D

    Thanks everyone. :)

    Karen, he is 4yrs old.

I didn't know dogs could get asthma either, it's a new one on me, but apparently it's often caused by allergies in dogs. Hopefully the lab results will throw up some answers soon. Will let you all know.

Keeping fingers crossed that it is a straightforward diagnosis with successful treatment.
