Mabel is a typical bundle of chocolate loveliness but the last 24 hours have been truly stressful. I was woken at just after midnight by horrendous crying from Mabel. I couldn't get to her crate quick enough, she had seriously vomited. She continued to vomit and have diarrhoea until 4.00 this morning when I called the vet due to her shaking and erratic breathing. Vet was brilliant she didn't need to be admitted as she wasn't dehydrated although she had 4 injections to help her. She has cried all morning and slept all afternoon wrapped in a blanket on the sofa. Visit to the vets this afternoon for another check up. She is on antibiotics as the vets thinks she has eaten something rather than a blockage. If she is sick over night back to the vets first thing in the morning for an X-ray. She has eaten some cooked chicken and rice and seems starving!! Keeping my fingers crossed I will be sleeping downstairs tonight just in case. To make matters worse she has the orthopaedic vet on Wednesday as she has developed an intermittent limp and funny walk. Problem seems to be with her too front legs. The vet said you are here quite a lot since beginning of April. Eaten a fruitcake she found in a hedge. Who puts cake in a hedge!! She had an injection to make her sick and then active charcoal. Urine infection she caught from sitting in the sea. Conjunctivitis twice and terrible bleeding gums when 8 baby teeth fell out all at once. My poor gorgeous girl. Will it get worse before it gets better I seriously hope not. Feel better having written all that.
Oh poor little girl. I hope she settles soon. Its so upsetting when they are unwell. Really wish they could speak. Had a few nights on the sofa myself (going out to vomit every half hour in the snow) So, like many others, you have my sympathies. Sounds like you have a great vet, so that is a comfort. Get well soon little Mabel xx
Glad you feel better for sharing. Nothing like a chocolate labrador for getting into mischief!... (and ending up at the vets..) Really hope she is OK soon, so utterly miserable though when they are poorly...
Poor Mabel and poor you, such a worry when our beloved dogs are ill. Hope she is feeling much better by now.
The poor little girl. And what a terrible stress for you. Hope she is feeling much better soon. As she gets older she'll have fewer ailments. Puppies seem to get everything under the sun. Hope things go well at the ortho vets.
Thank you for your lovely comments, seems a lot better today went for a short walk, amazing how obedient she was with an empty belly and my pocket full of chicken and rice. She's all curled up on the sofa now snoozing. x
Poor girl, I hated it when Myles was feeling bad after swallowing something. Hope she feels better soon.
So pleased that Mabel is feeling better today and is interested in chicken and rice, always a good sign that the worst is over with. Don't forget to let us know how you get on with the ortho vet regarding the intermittent limp and funny walk.
Mabel is much better, thank goodness. She has so much energy now it's a joy. Jumped in a smelly pond today, my away from water recall was going so well too We have had our first visit to the orthopaedic vet. On cue Mabel did the limp no limp scenario. After an in depth examination she is on anti inflammatory medicine with x rays to follow. They wanted to know hip and elbow scores of her parents. They are hip 4/2 for her dad and 3/4 for her mum. Dad has an elbow score of 0/0. I don't seem to have the elbow score for Mabel's, just contacted the breeder. Fingers crossed. They seem pretty good scores to me.
So sorry about Mabel. I hope she is soon better. I know how you feel, because Fred is ill too at the moment. He is on anti inflammatory medicine too. Glad she is getting better and has more energy today.
Do you have a date for x-rays yet? Hopefully the anti-inflammatories will help settle things down as well. The vet is being very thorough checking the parents hip and elbow scores as they can be an indicator for Mabel but, through bitter experience with Juno, please be aware that even with perfect scores for the parents puppies can still be affected by dysplasia. Wishing you all the very best for the x-rays.
Glad Mabel is feeling better . I spent so much time at my vets in the first year of Harley's life that they knew my voice when I phoned up!! Hope all goes well with the X-rays x
I really had a little chuckle made me feel much better. Mabel had her X-rays today, unfortunately she has elbow dysphasia. So upset for my little girl. Vet said things are actually very positive as she has responded very well to the anti inflammatory drugs. She is on them for the short term with a follow up appointment in 4 weeks. Long term the vet said the situation can be managed very well. It's funny how empty the house is without a dog. I've been shopping bought Mabel a couple of nice toys and a paddling pool and cleaned the kitchen floor. It was looking rather grubby although I quite like the paw print mud all over the place look
Oh, no, that's bad news for you, so sorry about the diagnosis. But at least you know the situation now, and can move on with it. Good that the vet thinks it can be managed without surgery. Don't worry too much; she'll be home soon.
