I think I've just about calmed down enough to post this . Christmas day at my in laws and Ella is outside with my in laws dogs (little white yapping type dogs). Ella finds these dogs quite boring as they're not really interested in her but there doesn't seem to be any issues between them. We all go outside to sit down for a while (recovering from our food coma) and I kneel down to give Ella a cuddle. Male little white yapper walks up behind me, cocks his leg and pees all down my back!!!!!!! To make things worse, my in laws say "that's what happens when you have a male dog, you really shouldn't kneel down on the ground around him". Now it's no secret that I have very little experience with dogs but I do have some friends with male dog's and haven't encountered this before. Is this normal or are my in laws confused about what is acceptable behaviour?
What? What? No! That is NOT what happens when you have a male dog! Ok, you can sort of have...er...accidents, like if your leg is in the way of a really, really tempting post....and there is the thing about park benches with slates (dog pees on back of bench that people are sat on....) but just peeing on a human? No!
Oh no, you poor thing, how gross. Peeing on people is not normal male dog behaviour. A male Border Collie peed in my handbag once (which was sitting on the ground). And maybe once I think I saw a dog pee on someone's shoe.... But it is an unusual behaviour, definitely not 'just what happens'...!!! You should definitely be able to kneel down around any dog without being peed on. I bet that your love for 'white yappers' has not exactly expanded
Ooo no way, I too have a male dog and has NEVER done that to anyone - yuk!!! I walk with a friend who has a male Doberman and he pees on Hattie, not the same I know but still!! x
I know he's a real pain, his owner spends a lot of time trying to make sure he doesn't cock his leg but occassionally it's too late I wonder if it's something to do with Charlie's scent on her.
Er...Charlie has been known to pee on the heads of yappy, snappy little dogs....thought I needed to 'fess up about that one...
Totally agree with other comments - no way is it acceptable or normal behaviour. When we had our boy the only thing he wee'd on that was inappropriate was a basket of logs when we arrived at a holiday cottage for Christmas one year. I blamed OH, not the dog. Poor you to be subjected to such poor behaviour.
Dreadful behaviour on the part of the little yapper - and very poor form on behalf on the owners for not realising it is THEIR fault for not teaching him where and when it is ok to have a pee!!! (Though i have to confess that my old dog Bones did once pee on a woman's leg at the park... In his defence i can only say that he was distracted at the time by the sight of his nemesis, Noltke the Weimaraner, at the other side of the park. Also, he was just not a very clever dog. But i was mortified, and did tell him off at least and apologised a thousand times!!!)
That is horribly bad manners of not only the little white yapper but it's owner too. At the very least the owner should have warned you. I do tell people you have to train the boys twice. First on horizontal surfaces - grass ok, carpet not ok. Then around maybe 8 months old or so again on vertical surfaces - trees ok, people and furniture legs not ok. Dogs can certainly learn to distinguish between people legs and trees, for heaven's sake. That said, Oban peed on my friend when he was 9 months old and in the learning stage and I was too slow to catch him. Worse, she was the agility judge at the all breed dog show we attended to take his Canine Good Neighbour test. I wondered if she'd tell the CGN evaluator and we'd be automatically failed. AFter all, that certainly wasn't being a good neighbour on Oban's part. Well, my friend was very gracious, said he missed and said he wouldn't be the last dog that day to pee on her. But it sure as heck was something I watched like a hawk for for months after so it never happened again.
The only time i've experienced this is with a very disturbed very fragile rescue dog who had no confidence at all and not real socialtion. With the help of Douglas my friend and me (mostly Douglas befriending him ) his confidence was built his bad behaviours addressed and he became a beautifully behaved happy dog. He also won rescue dog of the year locally which made my friend so happy. He is a really cool 12 year old now and still an honorary pack member in my house and one of Dougs all time best friends. He taught Rory to cock his leg when he was a pup...but not up people It took a while to stop this with Solo and we had to watch him but its not normal and anyone who says it is ......well what can I say. Most dogs don't wee on their friends it can just a stage that some young dogs go through but its more usually by accident or over excitement than intent. Not being warned is a bit strange too is there an element of bullying there? or did they think it was funny
What awfully bad manners of the owners , this is not acceptable behaviour at all , poor you Must admit that it did take Millie a couple of months to learn not to walk under Sam when his leg was cocked
Shadow is ALWAYS weeing on Willow. In his defence, it's because Willow is ALWAYS putting her head down to smell the thing that Shadow is in the process of covering up! He has never peed on a person, though. Yet. I'm pretty sure he's saving that humiliation for someone really good. Like the Queen. My sister used to say her old dog always peed on Americans!!!
