Many people die trying, and usually the dogs get out ok and the human drowns. That said, I have an awful feeling that I would be out crawling over the ice to try and save my dog..
Re: "Man rescues dog trapped in lake" Yup I think I would have gone for it. At least it was in open water. I think a hole in the ice would be a different matter re risk. Nearly lost Lady on Saturday when she got caught in some fast flowing water. Fortunately she has an ample scruff on her neck and I hoicked her out. I think she would have been ok but she would have ended up wrong side of a hedge in deepish water.

When the rescue service were criticised for the expenditure involved in rescuing a dog, they basically said that if they didn't go after the dog, they'd end up called out anyway to recover the body of the owner... Logically, you know you shouldn't risk yourself. In practice... I think it would be hard to remember the logical!! Clare
Re: "Man rescues dog trapped in lake" Whilst living in Scotland, one of my dogs got into trouble when swimming in a river. He got trapped under a fallen branch and began to get dragged underneath it. He was a very strong swimmer and I was waiting tentatively on the bank. After a while I realised he was not getting out and was going under, so I had to jump in. As soon as I hit the icy water, I had a flash of the headlines, “Man drowns saving Dog”. I managed to get him out and onto the branch, which he ran back to the banks side on and I, very slowly swam back to the bank using the branch as well. He ran off happy as anything and none worse for his incident; : I on the other hand had a mile of up hill walking back home in the freezing cold and with ice forming in my wellies. I was so cold; I shivered for an age after to try and get some circulation back and had to stand in hot water to crack my boots off. :'( While I am convinced he would have drowned if I hadn’t have jumped in and yes, I would do it again, I do know for sure I would have a long hard think first if should there ever be a next time.

Re: "Man rescues dog trapped in lake" Its difficult because i am sure most of our heads would say not to go in but my heart would tell me the opposite, and i know I would go in. Its the same with swerving a car to miss hitting an animal but then possibly crashing your car, I know it is usually safer to hit the animal rather than another car or a tree but in the moment I am pretty sure I would swerve!

Re: "Man rescues dog trapped in lake" I could not watch Charlie in trouble and not try to save him - I just couldn't do it. I bet lots of owners that risk it are not foolish, in terms of they know what might happen and go ahead anyway. So that's brave, I think.
