Managing three dogs on a walk..for the first time!

I have taught Amy my little Clumber a return to me finished with an auto sit but without the use of a verbal cue or a whistle. When I stop walking that's her cue to return. Just a couple of times in this video clip does she go out of range and I recall her with a little whistle (with my lips rather than acme). It teaches great engagement. Here she is accompanying me while I check on my horses in the field.

 

Ooh she's so bouncy and so well behaved all at the same time! And I can't get over how beautiful she is

 

If you were to stop for longer (talking to someone, tying your shoe, admiring the view, whatever), would you expect her to stay with you the whole time (assuming you've not given another cue), or would she keep popping off and coming back?

I taught her this as it is extremely useful in the beating line where there is a lot of stop start going on. She usually stays with me until I start walking again but the distractions in a field full of pheasants is massive so I might reinforce it with a sit.

Very beautiful Amy and so well behaved I have taught Hattie the exact same thing, if she goes a little far I stop she looks round I put my hand out to the side palm side out so I get a very speedy no verbal or whistle return with an automatic sit and hand touch. Hattie has always had good engagement but this has fine tuned it Now I have had to sit down and collect myself as I have taught something that you have Heidrun, never thought I would see the day, I think this calls for a celebration! xx

Where is Murffi?

 

It is probably one of the most useful things I have ever taught a dog.
Murffi is fine. He is seven now but still as crazy as ever.

 

Yes it's extremely useful so you always have an engaged dog. Pitty it doesn't work with Charlie

Glad Murffi is well, some photo's would be lovely . Reminds of of someone who shall remain nameless that is nearly seven and still CRAZY x

 

Excellent videos guys - very impressed. Esp having 3 dogs all under control at once.... having previously having 2 boxers i know from experience how difficult and daunting that can be taking them all out together.

I am happy with my one lab now, sometimes we have good walks other days not so good, but practice makes perfect, i believe?

I've got three dogs for a few weeks - we take them together about four times a week, I haven't tried it on my own (yet). Mollie is still quite a handful!

Thank you @redmal1, memories there of a lovely summer! Was in the same place today with the three of them...no chance of filming, it was all I could do to stay upright as it was really MUDDY!

 

Oh MUD!!! Will this rain EVER stop? That's why we are going to the beach later on, at least we won't be plodding through mud and the dogs will be cleanish when we get home!

 

And this is one reason I don’t live in the UK.

Smug.

Apart from all the good stuff I miss out on, but, still, so very little mud!!

 

What I would give for NO MUD!

 

Well it's odd though, where I live there is a lake with huge fish it in which for the last month have been dying due to lack of oxygen because the stream that feeds it has been dry for months, it's only this last weekend we had enough rain to get it flowing and the water is moving again, thank goodness. It was the most distressing sight to see great big carp thrashing about the shallows and lying dead on the side.
In fact for the whole 17 months I've had Cassie the streams on our walks have been either dry or just a trickle, whereas they are normally fast flowing.

 

Poor fish. Where are you? We have enough water here in West Wales to share! I am trying to keep Edie out of the rivers/streams as they are so swollen. Sophie pup (5 months) is still on little tiny walks so running water is still a mystery to her!
