i am working my socks off with the pulling on lead, last night unbeknown to mark i followed him on his evening walk, :'( :'( :'( i was horrified ,he just let jasper do anything he wanted to do , he did have him sit when he was pulling to hard, well once or twice, so from now on he is banned from walking him, at least until i get him walking to heel, i have took him out twice today , more on lead than off, the clever little monkey knows exactly what i want him to do,.... going on the walk i was turning round all the time, when we got to the beginning of one of his walks, he gave me that pull, so i turned him round and walked away,.....a few feet away he sat looking up at me with what i think was tears in his eyes, i didn't let the boy fool me, we walked on and headed for home,.....i had a sulky boy for an hour or two the next walk, carried on doing the same, when we was 10 yards a way from the field, he walked to heel perfectly ;D he as always walked nice back from his walk, from now on this is the way forward, i don't mind how long it takes,.......i will get there, i am using the jingler
Re: mark is banned from walking jasper It is all about persistence and keeping to the same training routine Lynne , so it is confusing if one person lets them do something and another one doesnt . You are right in what you are doing with Jasper , they are powerful dogs and the last thing we want is to be badly pulled , stick to your guns
Re: mark is banned from walking jasper thanks kate, i intend to, i am not one to let any thing beat me, mark is like 18 and half stone, he said to me he never pulls me, he wont do size of him,....its all learnt behaviour, ....kate once i get him walking to heel, i mean in the near future when he is 100 %, i will go out with mark to teach him, will it be ok for him to start walking him again
Re: mark is banned from walking jasper Thats the best thing to do Lynne , let Mark go with you and Jasper , show him what you do to correct the pulling and make sure that Mark understand how important it is that he carries on doing what you are doing , keep it consistant . You can put it really nicely to Mark , say how much you appreciate him taking Jasper outand that you want the two of you to work together , for Jaspers sake
Re: mark is banned from walking jasper thank you kate, i do most of the walking, it was when it was dark nights, i was a bit scared to take him out alone,.....if there is a time i cant walk him for any reason, from my back gate he can take him off lead to the field, i wont be letting him put his hands on the lead until this is mastered
Re: mark is banned from walking jasper I went through the same with my hubby :-\ I sat him down like a naughty school boy and gave him a 'telling off'. It worked he now copies what I do to train Harley to not pull
Re: mark is banned from walking jasper Mr Boogs lets Tatze 'fuss' - paw, nudge lick etc for attention. I don't. Luckily she has learned to only do it with him - rod for his own back!
Re: mark is banned from walking jasper mark is my son,....we have done every thing together recall e c t,....being a big lad, i don't think he realises how much he pulls, not letting him get his hands anywhere near the lead ;D just had him out,he was 60 % fine, much better than being 100% pulling watch this space
Re: mark is banned from walking jasper I think dogs can learn to behave differently with different people - so if you need your son to walk Jasper occasionally it won't necessarily mean your dog will forget proper walking with you. Or at least in our case Molly walks on a loose lead with me but not my OH because he doesn't insist (if we're out together I always hold the lead). And she bothers my OH for food at the table but again not me because I never give anything. It's one perk of dogs being bad at generalising!
Re: mark is banned from walking jasper thanks joy, that makes sense as he behaves a lot different to mark than he does to me
Re: mark is banned from walking jasper My two are the same. They are like completely different dogs with the OH. : Have you tried a gentle leader Lynne or I've read very good reviews about the canny collar. Just until jasper has learnt not to pull. With the canny collar you can slip the nose band off so you are then walking on a flat collar then put the nose band back on for more difficult situations like other dogs coming etc. I would think this would also make the transition from no pulling on a head harness to no pulling on a collar easier. I'm tempted by them myself, I use a gentle leader, but the lead attaches at the back of the head on the canny collar not under the nose so I think it might give the dog more strength than the gentle leader which I don't want. Just a thought.
Re: mark is banned from walking jasper I used to stress about the same thing as my in-laws don't really view not pulling in the same way as me. Now I'm just grateful they look after Riley for us and I just have to remind him of the rules when he gets back home ;D I've no doubt you'll crack this Lynne as you did the recall ;D
Re: mark is banned from walking jasper i intend to barbara thanks jen, i am teaching him to walk to heel, i am using the jingler, it seems to be working well he knows now when them bells jingle she is turning round, he is so funny he is turning before i do ;D
Re: mark is banned from walking jasper I was wondering if you'd got the jingler yet and how you were getting on with it. He's obviously caught on quickly to what the jingle means. I hadn't heard of them before it's great they are working.
Re: mark is banned from walking jasper been working with it 3 days now,....i had never heard of them, when he pulls you jingle down the lead and turn, he is turning as soon as i jingle
Re: mark is banned from walking jasper i cant believe the difference in just 3 days,.....may be i am putting more effort into it
Re: mark is banned from walking jasper Can I just say that this is your damned hard work and patience that's getting you results, not the jingler. I fought Honey in exactly the same method that you're doing just without bells. I say no and she knows she's turning. she prefers turning before I do. only problem i ever had with this method was when the dog started pulling in both directions as she'd totally forgotten which way she was trying to go....... that day we gave up and went home! Well done on all your hard work. my husband was banned for a while too but he was persuaded by the improvement in the end. S
Re: mark is banned from walking jasper
Can I just say that this is your damned hard work and patience that's getting you results, not the jingler.
True, in a way. Having looked at this again, I think the Jingler works in exactly the same way as Turid Rugaas' "make your noise" in "help, my dog pulls" - an excellent book. You make a noise, and turn. The dog learns to turn towards you on the noise, reducing stress on the dog from the about turns. So you don't need bells. But if it's a structured way for people to learn the technique, it still might be helpful (might be more expensive than the book though!).
