I am new to this forum. My oldest Lab, Winchester, age 10, just underwent surgery to remove a lump from his hind leg. He came through the surgery with flying colors (not happy about the "cone" he has to wear), but now we have to wait to see if the lump was indeed a mast cell and what level it is. Has anyone had any experience with this type of cancer?
Re: Mast Cell Growth My last Labrador had exactly the same problem when he was 10 years. We found a lump on his rear leg which was surgically removed and the histology showed it to be a Mast cell http://www.kateconnick.com/library/mastcelltumor.html at an early stage. He lived to a ripe old age and was not bothered by the condition. Roger Edited to fix link (Oberon)
Re: Mast Cell Growth I have no experience of this in our own dogs, but wanted to send best wishes to Winchester for a speedy recovery from his op.
Re: Mast Cell Growth My old managers dog has just had her second mast cell tumour removed. All I know was that she had quite a large wound from the op. Wishing your boy a speedy recovery and hoping the tumour isn't anything too nasty!
Re: Mast Cell Growth Hi there, welcome to the forum. I have a few friends on FB who's dogs have had these removed. All have been fairly simple ones I think, but they do seem to be recurrent, so I guess you will need to keep an eye out for any others. Wishing him a quick recovery.
Re: Mast Cell Growth Never dealt with this before so can't offer advice, but sending my well wishes also. Hope everything goes okay.
Re: Mast Cell Growth Thank you all for your well wishes. Winchester is healing and on his way to recovery. The lump was a grade 2 mast cell. They got it all in surgery but there is a chance it will happen again. We have to be very aware of any lumps or bumps he may get and have them checked immediately. Don't ignore the lumps!!! Thanks again.
Re: Mast Cell Growth Good advice My previous boy had a skin cancer removed from his leg at about age 9. It grew super fast but we were onto it quickly. Never had another one (lived to 14). Hope your boy is back to his normal self very soon
Re: Mast Cell Growth Hi, Pickles my ten yr old boy has two mass cell tumours in his front and back paws, both started in the nail bed and despite digit amputations, both tumours have spread up the side of his legs. He can no longer put his front leg down and sadly we are only weeks away from the end. What started out as a tiny red lump underneath his nail has rapidly turned into a life limiting condition. We are all absolutely devastated although our vet said it was quite common in black Labradors and boxers?? Best wishes to you and Winchester
Re: Mast Cell Growth 1st post for me, and not a very easy one. My boy, Homer (9.5) had a huge mc tumor removed from his back leg last October. Unfortunately metastasis had already started and we are counting day the days now. A large one developed in his groin and ulcerated and burst last week. We cleaned up, he settled and he still seems happy, not in pain and is a total food dustbin still. 3 times I have thought this is it, made the decision and found myself coming home with more meds. But while he remains the insufferable annoying little horror he has always been, I will wait till he decides its time.
Re: Mast Cell Growth So sorry to hear this Yellowlabrador. Hoping you and your boy can enjoy your remaining time together. Look after yourselves xx
Re: Mast Cell Growth I wish for the very best for Winchester, I have heard of good recoveries but of course there are very sad outcomes and it is heartbreaking.
Re: Mast Cell Growth I don't have any experience of this condition, but just wanted to say that I'm thinking of you and hoping that all is ok- keep us posted!
