Holly has mega dandruff, which she never had before, since she was spayed a month ago and then moulted. She’s shedding big flakes of skin, but doesn’t appear to be itchy at all. I haven’t changed her diet: she’s on Orijen, and I use Lily’s kitchen wet food in her kongs, so no grains. Is it to do with being spayed / part of moulting? Is the anything I can do for her.. she doesn’t seem bothered in the least but it can’t be nice for her.
My chocolate has always had dandruff. She has been spayed but had it before and is now 4. She is also fed on Orijen and we add 5mls of flax oil to her food daily. This has made a difference but not cured the problem. Watching with interest.......
Omega 3 fish oil capsules (& possibly a change of diet) cured our black Lab Scooby of bad dandruff (he'd been on a vegan diet before he came to us!).
I suspect it is a combination of the hormone changes affecting her coat and moulting. As suggested, an oil supplement will help. When we adopted Casper he had a terrible flaky coat (he had been neutered 3 weeks previously). Honestly, a tummy rub resulted in a snowstorm! A dollop of quality salmon oil in the mornings sorted that out.
I’ll give fish oil a go, but going to wait until her tummy is all sorted; she’s been on antibiotics because a small big of her spay wound hasn’t healed .. in day four of five day course and still has pus coming out, not very happy with it, think she may need another go with difference antibiotics. I’ll hold off giving her any oil supplements just in case she ends up with a runny tummy. Poor Holly.
