Sometimes when we go to Golitha Falls , we meet up with a lady who has a rescue Labrador by the name of Henry . He is about 18 months old, she has owned him for 6 months and quite frankly, he is a bully . Sam is non confrontational , he will never ever " have a go " , preferring the quiet life , Henry knows this and bullies Sam , nothing really aggressive, just taking Sams ball or dummy , tending to hoolie about and spoil whatever Sam is doing . To keep the peace , i usually pass the time of day and then walk on but at times, like today, the owner joins me, saying that its great because it tires Henry out to be chasing Sam in his effort to take things off him , I too am non confrontational so have tended to put up with it although I know that this is wrong of me . Millie usually tags along , play growling at Henry when he chases Sam but wagging her tail all the time, never anything nasty going on until this afternoon . Henry started his charging into Sam act , Millie got between them , I could see that she was trying to protect Sam when Henry went for her , in a big way, the noise was probably worse than it looked but he meant it , she tried to fight back but he is a big dog and overpowered her, turned her over and pinned her down, she screaming and Sam terrifed . The owner got Henry on lead and away from Millie who was shaking in fear , although thankfully , apart from one tiny little nick on her chin , she seems fine . Have learned my lesson now , no more keeping the peace for fear of hurting peoples feelings , Henry needs to learn some manners quickly but not at the expense of my dogs
Re: Millie had a nasty shock Oh that is nasty. Difficult situation on both dog and human level. At least it was just all noise because a Lab could do a lot of damage I expect.
Re: Millie had a nasty shock Oh no, poor you Kaye, and Millie and Sam.....what a fright you all had. I am glad she put him on his lead! I hope she apologised too?? I try to be non-confrontational but have had to a few times......it's not nice, but we have to prioritise our dogs Hope you can all relax for the rest of the day. Big hugs from me and licks to Sam and Millie from Harley x
Re: Millie had a nasty shock That is not nice, I would definately walk the other way if you see them again. It will stop Sam retrieving eventually if the ball is taken off him to often. A Dog with issues, thats why it was a rescue? Or shouldn't i say that.
Re: Millie had a nasty shock I am sorry Millie and Sam had a horrible experience Kate and hope they have recovered. xx Sue, no you shouldn't say that as not only rescue dogs have issues, many dogs bought and trained from pups can also have some nasty problems. I own a rescue dog so I don't like them always being branded this way [ A Dog with issues, thats why it was a rescue? Or shouldn't i say that.
Re: Millie had a nasty shock Oh no! So sorry to hear that. Poor Sam and Millie! You are right not to walk with that dog again.
Re: Millie had a nasty shock Poor Millie. Perhaps it will teach Henry's owner a lesson. I lost count of the number of times Murphy got attacked and the owners would say oh he/she has never done that before. I always wanted to shout well it has now put it on a lead but like you Kate I'm not one for confrontation. Murphy was a gentle giant like Sam and just wanted to play with other dogs while hey seemed to want to eat him!!! ???
Re: Millie had a nasty shock Sam is super, super gentle. Charlie is too, but even Charlie took advantage of Sam a bit (Kate said it was ok though, and it was more hero worship than anything else). It's hard to believe how tolerant big Sam can be.
Re: Millie had a nasty shock Thats a lovely thing to say Julie , Charlie hasnt got a mean bone in his lovely body and certainly wasnt being a bully , he is just exhuberent and as you say , a bit of hero worship going on , I could tell that Sam didnt mind one little bit
Re: Millie had a nasty shock
a bit of hero worship going on
A lot of hero worship! He was glued to Sam's heels all afternoon! My little hooligan ;D ;D ;D "What's Sam doing now?" HE'S DOING WHAT HE'S TOLD CHARLIE! Unfortunately, Charlie didn't pick up many tips... Re: Millie had a nasty shock Riley stole Sams ball too so he went on his lead so Sam had his ball to himself for a bit. It sounds like this lab was being terribly possessive to attack poor little Millie to get to Sams ball Hope you've all recovered xxx
Re: Millie had a nasty shock But Riley wasnt being a bully Barbara , Henry is a bully, he will run straight at Sam and push him . Unfortunately , nice as the lady owner is , she doesnt do any training with him at all , its a shame because he is a lovely looking lad , just needs a bit of structure
Re: Millie had a nasty shock Lady meets a dog like that most mornings, he's hardly trained at all, but she's her own worst enemy. He bullies her in a non-growly but very full on physical way and knocks her flat and then generally roughs her up. But then if he doesn't do that by way of a "greeting" Lady will almost certainly run up to him and whack him on the nose with her paws and then run off butt tucking and jinking all over the field. Strange girl.
Sounds like they have some rules of engagement worked out! Charlie isn't a bully - at all. Only twice he has given me a reason to wonder about his behaviour with other dogs - once with Sam, as above, but I honestly think that really was just a puppy not believing his luck at getting to play with a big boy for the WHOLE walk, and he just pestered Sam to play with him I think, and couldn't believe his luck again when he didn't get told off. The other was when he met a tiny pup, out on it's first walk, and again wanted to play but was a bit too enthusiastic, and the pup was a bit scared. But I just think it was just a case of Charlie being too bouncy and big really. What do you do if you have got a bully off lead? Say NO and put it on lead? And keep doing that?

Hopefully she's embaressed enough to steer clear and leave you in peace

Sam looks like a beautiful dog..and Millie as cute as a button..can't say anything about Charlie..cos I am soooo biased when it comes to chocolate labs! 8) ;D Sorry for what must have been an awkward and miserable experience. Just hope the owner learns something form it..
Re: Millie had a nasty shock I have heard that "He's just trying to say HI" so many times over the past years of dog ownership that I've lost count. It usually is followed by a dog being very aggressive towards mine, who is trying to get away at the end of the lead (my previous dog was not all that confident around other dogs, so i just hated seeing an off-lead dog approach. It's so frustrating. I think you're right, Kate, time for more firmness with the other owner!
Re: Millie had a nasty shock So sorry that Millie and Sam got a nasty fright Hopefully that lady will now see that her dog is not just playing...
