Hey all, I hope everyone has been well. Just left the vet with Milo and they said he's overweight, and to put him on a stricter diet. They suggested feeding him 1 1/2 cups a day. That seems awfully low to me, does that amount seem normal? I understand the reasoning behind him need to lose weight for health reasons, just not entirely sure if 1 1/2 cups of kibble a day is accurate. He is 90lbs, and 2 years and 4 months old. Thank you!
It's not about quantity of food, it's about the number of calories within the food. What weight does your vet want him to slim down to? What are his exercise levels? What food is he on?
Hi there, A good rule of thumb for helping a pet to lose weight is to reduce rations by a third for a week. If the weight is dropping stick with this amount until they reach the ideal weight, then begin to gradually slightly up the quantities to a point that they maintain that weight. There is a good article on helping overweight Labs here.
The vet didn't specify a weight for him to be healthy, just said he was overweight. He's on Taste of the wild currently, we spend an hour or two a day exercising and playing.
I’ve just done an online converter because I don’t really get cups but 1.5 cups is about 350grams according to google. I would say that’s a lot of food! My Stanley gets 75g on a morning and the same on an evening with training treats in between.
Ours was on 2 cups a day (this measured out at ess than what James Well beloved recommended) Vet said he needed to lose weight (He was 36.4KG could still feel the ribs etc didnt look weighty). He now gets 2 thirds of a cup twice a day and in 4 weeks he had lost 1kg. Vet is happy - we are happy as we had needed him to put on the weight initially (he was 26KG when we got him at 14months and skinny). On this amount he has maintained 35kg. He is walked 3 times a day one of those is for an hour with other dogs 5 days a week and then twice a day at weekends. It was a learning curve that kibble bags far exceed the requirements on their packaging
My pup is fed 'More' kibble and gets 70g breakfast and the same for tea with added wet food or sardines or vegetables or fruit. She was on 80g but she'd gained a kilo when I last weighed her hence the reduction. The recommended amounts according to the kibble pack is something like 220g daily so she is having a fair bit less.
