First thing this morning Molly was straining to poo with no results, but still raced around on walk with puppy friend. When we got back she started to heave and has brought up quantities of saliva. Half an hour ago she had a very bad bout of diarrhea (gushed out like water and looked bloody - sorry for graphic description!) She's now looking very sorry for herself - just lying in the garden, doesn't want to come in. She has drunk a little water but is refusing all food. (I've only offered her a treat or two to gauge how she's feeling and she is showing no interest.) She is a dreadful scavenger, but I'm not aware of her eating anything unusual yesterday.

I am undecided about whether to phone the vet. She's been so resilient all her life so far.

    Hi Joy,

I'm no expert but in IMO if there is blood coming out of a dog, in any form, then a vet call/visit is probably prudent (sorry to be a drama queen!)

Poor love , she must be feeling miserable to refuse a treat , if it were me I would call the Vet . often pups can have upset tums whilst still behaving as normal but she is clearly not feeling good , best to err to caution Joy :(

Why not just call the vet? Just ask then whether it sounds like you should take her in? It depends on your vet, of course, but the vet nurses at the vets I use are great at giving this kind of advice and if it doubt, they'll put one of the vets on the phone.

    Re: Molly has upset stomach

Thank you all for your concern. I took her to the vet this afternoon and her temperature was normal and when he felt her stomach he said he couldn't feel anything. He also said that she wasn't dehydrated. He gave her an injection to stop her being sick and a dose of Promax paste, which I have to give her for the next 2 days. He said he expected she'd be better by tomorrow but if not to collect a poo sample and go back. The vet also told me not to feed her until tomorrow and sadly that's proving easy - I wish she was pestering me for food.
Still she hasn't been sick any more or had diarrhea again and just seems sleepy - definitely not herself.

I hope you both sleep well and that Molly is feeling better tomorrow. Puppies are brilliant at bouncing back.

I'm pleased to say that Molly seems more or less OK now. Still not had a normal poo but she's got much more energy and has just started to demand food - by banging the fridge! A big relief!
