    Hello lovely puppy people!

Okay, so our lovely Buckley (8.5 weeks old golden lab) started to pee in the crate overnight ( we think it''s small enough, making it any smaller just seems like it would unkind!). So, we decided to leave his crate open and allow him access to his puppy pen overnight instead figuring that we'd just clean things up in the morning, Which is fine, except he is waking us up to let us know that he has just done a wee and a poo rather than waking us up beforehand (or not waking us at all)!!!!

Yesterday it happened just before 6am, so we set the alarm for 5:30 this morning to try and pre-empt him, but here i am writing this at 4:30 as he just decided to get in early!!!

i guess I'm just wondering whether we're doing things right. I'm assuming that he will become dry/clean at night sooner rather than later, and we are continuing to work hard at house training during the day - we're mostly getting it right, although he does seem to slip some wees past us still!

Any suggestions for anything we are not already doing (and even a bit of reassurance) would be gratefully received!

    Heather x

Bless his little heart! I didn't do the get up in the night thing so I' m not sure if this is right, but perhaps it's a case of "well I'm awake so where is everyone else"? Perhaps if you go down and quietly put him back to bed with no interaction he'll get the idea to wait until morning.
They do become dry/clean overnight, I think that when they can do more in the daytime that makes a difference. They all get there in the end!

    Yes - Twiglet did that!

I cleared the wee/poo up and quietly put her back to bed. I think it’s a good sign that they want it cleared up.

Whatever you do, be sure you don’t give breakfast till breakfast time.

    :)

I tried to do that, but Luna had a habit of laying in the wee and poo once she'd done it, then shouting. So I had to clear up the mess AND the puppy. In hindsight, for her, it would have been far easier to just have her in the crate and set the alarm as I did when Willow was a young pup. But not all puppies are as ridiculous as Luna :D

Which is a really good point.

They are all so different when it comes to the early toilet training days, especially at night time. It’s worth, imo, having all the equipment ready then adapting to the pup according to how they are and what works.

Be assured, they all sleep through eventually :)

I feel like I want to underline that "eventually" about thirty times :D

Don't worry, OP, your puppy won't be like Luna, I'm sure :cwl:

For the first week or so we took the pup(s) out several times a night so they plenty of opportunities to go outside. We did not have a lot of accidents in the crate (or maybe I blocked them out of my mind)
