Our little lad is now 13 weeks, the good bits: sit, coming back, bringing things back, walking to heel, lead work all going fine. Then there's the biting, barking at me to play with him, turning into a whirling dervish around 7:30pm until about 9:00pm, stealing stuff, sneaking into the kitchen cupboard by turning invisible, singing himself to sleep...... And teaching the 'down' is impossible, I think it's in his working line genes.

All great fun, so much pleasure. It's great having a new puppy!!!

Here he is at 6, 8, 10 and 13 weeks. He's very self conscious about his elephantine ears so don't laugh ;)

Hi Gad, such cute pics. He looks just like my Meg she has long lovely ears just like that. She is 18 weeks and wow is getting her to do down so hard. She is bright as a bobbin has hit everything else so easily but bottom up every time we do down. I have just got her to do it twice at puppy class this eve so will see if shes finally cracked it. So I am interested in what you say about working lines and she has very strong background of FTCh in her line. I wonder if they are related as they do look like twins :)

His dad was FtCh Waterford Ganton........

Let's se some pics of Meg!

It was a little tongue in cheek though as lab gundogs didn't traditionally get taught a down - or it could be my rubbish efforts ;)

Interesting that they don't get taught a down.

He's really cute. Especially his ears :)

Love his ears! he's looking lovely and growing fast :)

We find Rileys down comes and goes because I don't use it in training at all it's only at home he sometimes gets asked to lie down. I figure as long as he goes to his bed and stays there I don't mind if he sits, lies or stands on his head

Lovely looking dog. I think my next task is to get Kenzi to like the phone so she'll sit nicely like Murphy while i'm taking pics of her.

Aww Murphy is definitely a very cute boy and his ears look like Pointer ears, he will grow into them :) Sounds like the training is going fine. You could clicker train the down by luring with a good treat :-\ x

He is beautiful - especially the ears! (Oops, don't mention the ears...) :) Molly sported the Dumbo look too for ages.

Oh it were so simple. Best treat In the house, get him to sit, treat in closed hand between his front legs, close to his front legs, behind his legs - he looks at you like you're an idiot. A bit of hand licking, gets bored, wanders off. Tried shaping, can't get that right either, I don't think I've the patience for that. So gently get him to down while sitting, C&T, no joy with that either, next session, back to square one. Gave up as I'm happy too if he just sits or goes to bed.

My Murffi's ears have got their own fan club! ;D

Ziggy is a field trial award winner and he doesn't know the down command. My other three dogs do but I can't see any real use for it so I didn't bother teaching Ziggy it. :D
