Dawson was fed at 7pm and has just brought all his food up whole. He is an 8 week old pup.He seems ok but obviously he is now missing a meal if you like. What do you think I should do now????
If he has been otherwise okay, no diarrhoea, not in pain, tummy soft and not sensitive, and playing and reacting as normal, I would just encourage him to drink, and maybe try a very small amount of soggy kibble in an hour or so and see if he is interested. If he is off colour at all, keep a close eye on him. Has he eaten anything different/that he shouldn't have today?
Thanks for your swift reply. His poo is solid and he's been quite active. His food hasn't changed at all. At present he is asleep but I will make sure he has water when he awakes and try him on a small amount of soggy kibble as suggested.
Did he try to eat it again afterwards? Sometimes they'll regurgitate their meal and eat it again when they've eaten too fast or it just hasn't felt right in their stomach. If he's acting OK and drinking water then just keep an eye on him. Any lethargy or unable to keep food down again, pop him to the vet. Try not to worry though (easier said than done) we've all had at least one puppy vomit story and it usually turns out to be nothing
Nothing like a Labrador puppy trying to inhale his food! I found soaking the kibble before a meal helped with digestion the first few weeks.
Good morning.I did what you said and soaked a bit of food for him and left it out.I took him into the kitchen to settle him down as he was quite lethargic. When he saw the food he was like a robber wanting the getaway car!!!! After he ate I put him straight in the hub and he fell asleep. I went to bed at 12.50 and couldn't sleep because it was his first night alone and couldn't believe he went the whole night without moaning. In fact we got up together at just after six and Dawson was at the bottom of the stairs waggling his tail like mad. A quick check revealed no poo in the house and I am so happy he seems to cope with our absence.I wonder if the food made him feel nice and the difference. Maybe a bit silly but his nose was wet which I,rightly or wrongly, see as an indicator of how he is. One more cup of coffee and another day begins chasing Dawson and two of the three boys around all day!!!
Glad to hear Dawson seems ok. If he gobbles his food too quickly, perhaps he needs a slow feeder bowl like this http://www.petsathome.com/shop/en/pets/dog/dog-bowls-and-accessories/dog-bowls/green-feeder-(online-only)?orderBy=1# or there are maze-type ones available too.
I saw one of these bowls on a you tube video and now I know what it is for.I think it's a great idea and will have a look for one.Thank you for sharing that with me.
It's likely that he's eating too quickly and maybe his meals are too big for his age too? He will be less hungry if you split his meals. We give our pups small meals (four a day) in very large bowls which slow them down. One pup ate so quickly we fed her on a tray.
I had the same problem with Rory I just used to scatter feed him on a piece if fleece. It really slowed him down.
Just last week I bought Bella one of the slow feeder bowls ( the maze type) from pets at home as she always used to demolish her meals within seconds ...what used to take her 10 seconds to eat now takes 10 minutes ...although the first time she used it she did get bored with it and decide it was quicker to just tip it over with her paw ...after gently reminding her not to play with her food she has not done it since lol
