I was talking to a friend the other day who said that her little pup developed a lump after his second vaccinations... see her email below. I was wondering if anyone had any experience of knowledge of this condition?

Mark and I both fine but Buddy has been a poorly puppy. Last week he had his second jab and had a bad reaction. He has had an abscess the size of a half tennis ball on the back of his neck and had to have it lanced at the vets, his also and on antibiotics. There is a special name for this condition, which they had heard of at the vets, but had not actually seen it. When we went to the vets today they said that they have gone back to the drug company for the type of vaccine and batch to be tested further. Buddy is getting better now and is fine in himself and has been able to go out for his first walk today. (We have been walking him in the back garden before now to get him used to the lead and outdoors.)

Poor pup... It's reasonably common to get a lump developing at a vaccination site, as a reaction to the needle (can even be a response to a silicone coating on the needle) but it goes down by itself in about a week. My dog gets this when he has his vaccinations. In his case it's about the size of a squash ball. It does not necessarily indicate any problem with the vaccine.

But of course it may well have been something quite different in your friend's puppy's case. I hope he's all better soon...

I had the same problem with my cat after an injection, when I went to a different vets, they said that the vet should rub the area to disperse the medication as if not it can develop into a lump.
I've always watched the vets now and thankfully they have all rubbed the area after.......I always thought they were just being friendly to my pet.

Might be an idea in future just to rub the area yourself straight away if the vet doesn't.
