My yellow lab Daisy is a year and a half. Last month she started eating her poop. She may walk away initially but go back for it later. We are now cleaning up the best we can. But she has an acre to run and we can't follow her all the time. I've tried Tabasco sauce on it and that sure deters her on that one. She's feed good food and has enough to eat between her meals and training treats, so she's not hungry. Do they ever outgrow this? Any suggestions? Thanks, Ruthi
Re: My Lab eats her poop This is a rather common problem, and certainly a rather unpleasant one too! The good news is it won't hurt her, even if it's totally gross from our perspective. Have a read of this article here: http://www.thelabradorsite.com/why-dogs-eat-poop-and-what-you-can-do-about-it/ You are most definitely not alone in having this to deal with.
Re: My Lab eats her poop Hi Ruthi, and welcome. My dog used to eat her poo, and stopped immediately when we started her on a raw diet.
Re: My Lab eats her poop Thanks for your comment. I really don't want to get into raw food. But where do you buy the raw food, just what is it and how do you know it doesn't contain any bacteria or e coli etc. Thanks, Ruthi
Re: My Lab eats her poop Hi Ruthin. Have you had a look at the raw feeding board on here? I am not a raw feeder but do some recreational raw. If you are concerned about bacteria in food I think that most raw is human grade food or carcasses etc left over after the good bits are removed for humans so not really a great concern. Dog's guts are pretty robust and things like e coli are easily zapped. A lot less of a hazard than them scoffing and scavenging on loose walks in my experience!
