    Hi everyone!
I am new to this site and i am also a new owner to my first Puppy which is a beautiful 3 month old Labrador Retriever.
She is a beauty! but I am extremely worried, since I have had her she has been having some on and off diarrhea and mixed with blood. I got worried and took her to the vet, vet said she is under weight, (7.5) lbs and was dehydrated. They gave her fluids and examined her and physically she looked great, but they did some fecal labs which all came back normal. (and pavo was negative)
Next she wanted to draw X-rays and more labs if the bleeding continues. well, she is still having bloody poop and somewhat diarrhea . this week I am taking her in but I am still worried.

She is a extremely active Puppy, she gets into everything, and plays with my kids, she doesn't act sick nor tired.
except for that bloody poop. and on top of that, she poops so much, Example 3 times a night, and about 4 -5 times a day. its driving me nuts because we are still training her to go outside.

Please anyone can ease my mind before her appt. any ideas what this could be?

    Thanks
    _yolanda

Hello and welcome from me and my two dogs . What is your pups name ? So sorry to hear of your worries , I wonder if she has a little irritable bowel trouble ? Pups often do poo a lot but she is doing an awful lot , just go ahead with whatever your Vet advises re Xrays and tests , please do let us know how it goes

Hello and welcome to the forum. This must be a very worrying time for you. It's not easy to say what's going on with your pup, as it could be all sorts of things, lots of them completely benign. It's most likely something like colitis, which is an inflammation of the colon and caused by all sorts of easy-to-manage things such as an allergy to something in her diet or worms.

Just keep on with your vet and keep ensuring she is getting plenty of fluids. Adding honey to her water, or a bit of low-sodium meat stock can help a puppy to drink more.

Until this is fixed, I wouldn't put too much emphasis on the poo part of the toilet training, as you'll just end up frustrated and she can't be expected to hold it in. Just keep taking her out regularly for wees as I'm sure you're already doing, and praise her loads when she does go.

Welcome to the forum! Do hope your vet finds out soon what the problem is. Good luck with your little one.

It could very well be diet related if all the medical tests have come back negative.

What has the vet tested for? You mentioned parvo but what about campylobacter or giardia? Has she been wormed regularly?

Penny, We just adopted her about 1 1/2 weeks ago, the papers state that she has been wormed regularly and all her vaccines are up to date, but the vet could not confirm because there was no vet signature with the paperwork that the previous owners provided. All the Vet did was do A complete Fecal test and all were negative. next is X-rays

She has not been vaccinated yet until the vet figures out what is going on.

Penny, she was started on Puppy chow, but I noticed when she eat puppy chow she tends to bleed more, so the vet prescribed her a Low diet Chicken and rice to be mixed with the puppy chow, that has helped somewhat, but today her stools have a lot of blood, Mucusy, and light grey.
I don't know what to think.

I don't really know what puppy chow is...is that a brand of food?

Have you tried cutting out the 'puppy chow' completely for a couple of days and only feeding chicken and rice? If it's diet related this should improve her stools and might give you an idea of where to begin. With such a young puppy I wouldn't recommend feeding only chicken and rice for a prolonged period of time as it won't have the nutrients she needs to grow and develop properly but if it works to get her stools solid you can then try to slowly introduce a good quality puppy food and go from there.

Thank Penny, It is a Brand name that the vet at Banfield Hospital recommended, and I have also tried taking it out of her diet actually for 4 days with little to no bleeding in her stools, I also switch with different types of food from what the vet prescribed, from beef to chicken for now. Tomorrow is her vet appt. but I am curious, her vet prescribed her medicine in case she did have worms, should I give her that anyways? I'm curious cause I read online that the test can still come back negative and still have worms?

Hi HuescaArts. Sorry to hear about your concerns.
If it's any comfort, you are far from alone, and reports of evil poops seem to be incredibly common in new pups.

If your vet has already tested Chloe's stool samples and ruled out a parasitic infection I think that's an excellent start, and I'd be thinking about food next.

I suspect the frequency of her pooping is just related to the runs. When Gemma has them she needs to go a lot!
Just as us humans do after a dodgy curry :)

During my first 3 months with Gemma, we went through most of what you describe. It wasn't constant though, the blood and mucus showed up intermittently, but her stools were always watery and loose.
I kept Gemma on the breeders food to start with, a cheap chicken and rice dry feed, and her rear end was never right. It's possible Chloe just has an intolerance or allergy toward certain food stuffs?

You can go down the road of getting allergy tests done with the vets, but in my case, I switched her to a completely different food, fish based and wheat free, and struck lucky on the first attempt.
After months of grief, the difference was incredible. Poops like shotgun shells that could finally be picked up, as opposed to scooped up!

Two things that I've learned since that set her off. A certain UK major brand of puppy treats brought back the diarhea, with blood.
I now refuse to feed her anything with an ingredients list that you need a chemistry degree to understand.
And I once gave her a dried pigs ear - never again. I think sharp bits can literally tear up their insides.

I suspect Gemma does have an intolerance to something, although it isn't chicken per-se, as fresh chicken causes us no problems.
But food labels often say "meat and animal derivatives" which could be gawd knows what.

So before you lose all hope, I'd be looking carefully at her food. Try something completely different with nothing in common to the current food.

JohnG Thank you so much! I feel some sort of relief in knowing this. I do notice a difference in each Diet I get her on, every food is different causing her to have more blood then other foods. I will look into this. THANK YOU! I am a First Time parent to a Pup, and my heart sank when i seen the blood, I was thinking to worse. She's like my own child, I hate seeing this in her stools.

Never thought I could love a dog as much as I love my own kids.
    Thank you again!

There's one thing here that rings alarm bells for me - that you have been changing her food often. This alone can cause upset tummies. When you change the food are you doing it gradually? Ideally a change over should take about 10-14 days until you are weaned off one food and onto another. Longer possibly if you have a dog that is particularly sensitive to changes in diet.

I would recommend you find one brand and one flavour and stick to it for a while to give her tummy a chance to settle. Also cut out all treats and chews for now. As JohnG mentioned above there are a certain couple of brands of treats here in the uk that give my Penny the runs and she can't really have anything with pork in.

Hi Yolanda, welcome to the Forum,I glad you've found us ,you sound like you have had a very worrying time.My dog who is nearly 3 now came to us at 5 months and I had a long periods of upset tummies, never blood in the stools but he had terribly loose stools.I can sympathies with your heart sinking when you see the blood, mine used to nearly stop when I'd see Dexter upset again. We finally got his diet right,a gradual change over to a sensitive type better quality food ( Royal Canin) and Dexter was diagnosed and treated for giardia...finally we got it under control.I still think he has a sensitive tummy but maybe he doesn't ...I am just so careful about what he eats, anything new is introduced really slowly that he hardly has any episodes now.I would like to change his food over to an even better quality one ( I firmly believe feeding the best you can afford and have access to is key) something that is fish based but I'm scared of messing things up,he thrives on what he is eating now and it was so worrying when he wasn't right,I'd rather not mess about. X
