I'm so excited. My new puppy is expected to be born this week. The original due date is the 10th, but the breeder said her dog is huge and brought her to the vet and she gained 17 pounds. The vet saw at LEAST 8 puppies! And said they all look good. The vet doubts the dog will be able to hold out until Sunday. Now I am just waiting to hear about the whelping and what the colors/sex of the litter are. I'm so excited. Not sure how I am going to wait the 8 weeks till I can take him home with me.

Yes, I will definitely go to visit. I dont know how early she lets visitors come yet. I imagine 3-4 weeks old. I live about 2 hours away so I wont be visiting more than 2 or 3 times until we can bring the dog home. I am so excited! My kids are excited (ages 6 & 8) but they are sick of hearing me talk about the puppy. LOL! I just cant help myself.

Its been 12 years since I have been thru this puppy stage! I need to get my crate back from my in-laws and I need to find some old kongs and toys that my current dog never really took to (or buy new ones).

I need to pick out an AKC name for him! Any suggestions? I think I will call him Sheamus, if I get the black lab I want. I could get a chocolate if there are no black males.

Very exciting! It's hard to choose a name till you meet them isn't it?

Very exciting news! Our breeder let us poke our head in the puppies room when they were 2 weeks old but we were only allowed about 10 seconds. We had to wait till 4 weeks for a proper visit and got to cuddle all the pups that time. The six week visit was my favourite as all the puppies were really playful. Time went so slow waiting for the eight weeks to be up but now it seems like Ash has always been here and he's only 14 weeks old. Best of luck. Post a photo when you have one.

I will go visit the pups as soon as allowed, but only if I can make a proper visit. I cant drive 2 hours 15 minutes to only peek at them for 10 minutes. The breeder I got my current lab from allowed us to visit at 4 weeks. Then we went back at 5 weeks. And finally to pick him up at 8 weeks. This time maybe I will go at 4 weeks, 6 weeks and 8 weeks? My kids really want to visit too but I hope they will be on their best behavior. Thinking I should make the first trip alone and then bring them at the 6 week trip. Now I am just waiting for the email to say the pups have arrived. Since the due date is Sunday, I am hoping that they dont come until Friday at the earliest. How early is too early for the pups to come?

How exciting! IT will be a long 8 weeks! We viewed ours at 7 weeks and collected them at 8 weeks and i swear that week went in slow motion lol! I was on an hourly countdown and once it was under 24 hours i could barely contain myself! We had a few names in mind, but as we had intended to get a boy and a girl we were stuck for a second boy's name when we decided we would get two boys. After we had seen them we all suddenly agreed on two of the many names we had thought about, and they suit their characters beautifully - Jack aka Jumping Jack Flash as he jumps like a springbok when his dinner is cooling, and Barney aka Barney T Rubble - trouble with a capital T lol

Can't wait to see pics x

Well the puppies came. an emergency c section was needed and 2 puppies were lost. Now there are 6 and there might be a chocolate boy for me, if the breeder doesn't keep him for herself. There is definitely a chocolate female available. And she says she has a friend who she thinks has a black male available. I had originally wanted a black male. I really do want a male though. But I don't know what to do. It probably takes 7 weeks or so before she figures out if I can have the chocolate male. she'll keep the dog if she thinks it has show dog potential. I'm just making assumptions. Do I try to find another breeder? Hold out hope that the she will not keep the chocolate boy and I can have it? Agree to take the chocolate girl if the boy is not available? It will be so hard to wait 7 weeks to know for sure what we are getting!

What a disappointment for you potentially.
Oh gosh....we had a similar (ish) situation happen to us before we got Lilly.
In that the litter we had ear-marked only had one surviving girl and two dogs after a C-section and the breeder decided to keep the girl as they didn't think they would breed from the mum again. We were offered one of the boys, and also a yellow pup from a friend's litter.
My OH and I both wanted a girl. And OH had his heart set on a black like his old dog, and might always be looking at our dog feeling it was the wrong decision, wrong color.
For us, timing was really important so we found another litter ready at the "right" time for us, from a casual breeder, but in hindsight knowing Lilly's HD problem, perhaps a bad decision.
My advice is go with your head not your heart. I think. Good luck.

When I started looking at pups, I wanted a boy and either chocolate or black. I ended up at the other end of the spectrum - a girl - red fox :) :) personally, I'm glad I changed my mind.....I wouldn't change Harley for anything, I fell in love with her the first time I held her :d

Re: My puppy is going to be whelped this week!

Originally, I wanted a chocolate female. The "mother" had a false pregnancy so, after waiting for one month to find this out, I went looking for another breeder.
Found one close to home, yellow...and she had 8 puppies. I still wanted a girl BUT, as is happening to you, the breeder kept two girls out of the litter and, since I was number six on the list I got the last puppy left.....turns out it is a BOY. His name is Cooper and he is a delight AFTER going through much of the biting stages, housebreaking, etc.!!! The reason I wanted a female was simply for the weight as an adult....Cooper is going to be approx. a 90 pound boy! Wouldn't change him for the world! Good Luck....
