after taking my time training with the exercises i have now come to an end with it......i was up to chapter 12 proofing with people, i have only my son i could use to train with me....i have not got different people to train with,.....so i read on to chapter 13 proofing with dogs....well i don't have any one i know who as a dog, or as the time to help me to do this training,.........to pay a dog trainer for an hour would be 50 pound an hour, minimum of one hour session , this exercise would need to be done over time, .... this would be very costly to me,........so after all the hard work i have put in of the past month, as all come to an end sadly as i have given this my 100 % can you give me any further advice please
Re: my total recall as come to an end Same here! Not got total recall book yet. ( but I have, how to win). Fancy a trip up north for practice? After been told she is too strong for me yesterday. Today I was told I needed to go to training with her. As you know I ready have....today we where at the park with about 10 kids and 5 different dogs. All off lead coming to her! and the guy trying to talk to me. Anyway, when ya coming???
Re: my total recall as come to an end i livein northwest jade, i am in greater manchester where are you ?
Re: my total recall as come to an end a bit far that jade to practise........did this all happen in the park today, not surprised amy as gone off her food with all the abuse......how is amy ?
Re: my total recall as come to an end She is full of trouble, 4 hours on her own leads to 4 hours of trouble once I get back in! Maybe because they are big dogs people don't realise they are puppies?
Re: my total recall as come to an end awh i know you have had a bad time of it,..........things will get better for us i am sure hardest thing i have ever done in my life
Re: my total recall as come to an end Hi Lynne, don't be downcast, you have come a long way! No training is ever wasted. Think of all the situations you can recall your dog in, rather than focusing on what you have not yet achieved. As far as completing the programme goes, the bottom line is, that if you want to be able to call your dog away from other dogs, you need to practice calling your dog away from other dogs. There are different ways of doing this, but unless your dog hates other dogs, you will need to find a way to practice this at some point. The alternative is to accept that he will always be unreliable in the presence of other dogs. Which would not be the end of the world! The truth is that plenty of people have much worse trained dogs than you, and you still have a better behaved dog than if you hadn't done any training at all. Pippa
Re: my total recall as come to an end thank you pippa,.....he loves other dogs, so when i read this my heart sank to the floor,.....chapter 12 i will be able to manage, get my son in law to come after work and my brother in law , ........when i read chapter 13 i was so down hearted, my niece as a shih tzu dog that is her baby, i spoke to my daughter asked do we know anyone with a dog, that would be able to help, .....she said my niece would help, but hes a little dog i think she would be worried about jasper being too big and strong for her baby,.....when i walk him off lead he never goes up to other people , just other dogs, i just put this down to him being a puppy,......with being so big i think he may scare small dog owners...i am not giving up, ...thank you pippa your book is amazing with step by step instructions, that even i can follow
Re: my total recall as come to an end I can hear your discouragement in your post, Lynne. I haven't started the book yet but I imagine I could come to a halt at that point too. Do try to focus on the positive! You are developing a relationship with a lovely dog - and he's still a puppy yet. Do you have a dog park nearby where you could maybe try it? Or where you could meet some people who might be able to help??
Re: my total recall as come to an end Lynne, just a thought here , could you ask your Vets nurses if they know of anyone with a larger calmer dog who may be willing to walk with you and Jasper, just the odd time ?
Re: my total recall as come to an end Another couple of thoughts.... Is there somewhere local that everyone walks their dogs - a small area of woodland, or a safe park? A good place to possibly strike up a conversation or make new doggy friends - I have found most doggy people pretty chatty and understanding too about *badly behaving dogs* ;D I found joining a local training class excellent for making doggy friends, and mine costs £7.50 a week which is not cheap particularly for classes around here but is OUTSIDE which I think is important. We still go along as much as anything for the social aspects, and that includes working on Lilly's social skills in a group setting, as well as having introduced me to one lady at least who I will go out walking with. You never know whats around the corner Lynne. Stick in with it. Every walk is a learning and training opportunity. jac
Re: my total recall as come to an end
Every walk is a learning and training opportunity.
I agree with this completely, it doesn't always happen but I sometimes get the chance to call Riley away from other dogs on walks which I always look on as a little training bonus. Sometimes we don't meet anyone (solitary bliss) but other times we meet loads of dogs. Don't be downhearted Lynne you've done so well. Riley has always been a shocker for wanting to be with other dogs but he has got better I've just had to be patient, vigilant and persistent. All of which you already are so you will get there! Most of all don't let it stress you out and if you're somewhere new or there are too many dogs just keep him on his lead and enjoy your walk
Re: my total recall as come to an end this exercise as got to be done at home......this as got to be repeated until your dog recalls away from the other dog as soon as i give the whistle....this wont happen over night, got to practise over time . also to call away from a moving dog
Re: my total recall as come to an end Hi Lynne. I think if you've got that far with Total Recall you have done really well. My view on this training stuff is if I can get "near enough" that's probably ok. Lady has loads of faults and short comings but I've decided we are pretty much near enough on the important stuff. For example she will stop on a whistle command and not move until I release her - as long as I maintain eye contact. She will recall except she's not reliable with other dogs, not so much that she is ignoring me but she's nervous at best playing with dogs and she doesn't want to appear to be running away from them. She will deliver a dummy or a real bird but she drops it at my feet rather than into my hand. I've gone for near enough as it's as much as I can manage really. Enjoy your lovely dog!
Re: my total recall as come to an end The point of doing the exercise at home first, is to make it easier for you and the dog by giving you complete control over the level of difficulty. If you absolutely cannot find a way to practice at home, then you will have to do the training in 'live' situations. There is nothing to stop you doing this, many people do it this way, but it does make it harder on you. It is probably a good idea to use your training line to begin with so that the dog can rehearse the right behaviour. This gives him a chance to build up a 'memory bank' of correct responses. You will need to pick and choose the situations in which you use your new recall signal, and to avoid using it in very challenging situations to begin with. Pippa
Re: my total recall as come to an end I totally agree with David. For many people 'near enough' is 'good enough' I hate to think that anyone sees Total Recall as a test which they have failed if they don't get to the end! That is not what it is for. It is there to show you how to go 'all the way' in recall training, if that is what you want to do. I sincerely hope people will take from it what they need, and what helps them, and not feel a failure if they don't complete every exercise or finish the entire programme. As David says: enjoy your dog. At the end of the day, that's all that really counts.
Re: my total recall as come to an end thank you pippa,.......i have took the exercises very slow.....the whistle seems to be his best friends.....even walking away from food,.... i will go out with my son on the weekend,......my sons girlfriend as 2 black female labs, .....they have met jasper but they are old and he as to much energy for them, .......going to meet up with the family using the training lead............i enjoy my jasper i love him to bits...i have said before i only want a pet dog, i dont want him to be in any danger with other dogs, so i just want to be able to call him back, when he spots another dog and runs towards them
Re: my total recall as come to an end You're doing great Lynne, Jasper is lucky to have you. Dont get downhearted; look at what you have achieved so far! He's a lovely boy and you are doing a super job with him.
Re: my total recall as come to an end I completely agree with the others Lynne , you have done so very well and truly , it doesnt really matter if you dont complete everything . Wise words from David , enjoy your dog , Jasper and you have worked very hard x
