So, I took Willow out for her last walk of the night. I saw where she was running on the snow, she was leaving quite a lot of blood, so I came back to see in the light, and she's ripped one of her nails off! The only thing left is the quick. It looks SO sore, but she doesn't seem bothered in the slightest. She's not limping, nor licking it or paying it any attention. I've put betadine on it, which she didn't like, and I'll take her to the vet in the morning. I take it there's no reason to go to the emergency vet. Any idea what they'll do at the vet? I'm amazed she's not bothered by it, it looks horrendous!!!
Re: Nail ripped off!!!! Wouldn't think it necessary for the emergency vet unless it continues to bleed or starts swelling. Can't help with what the vet will do either but it certainly sounds very painful. Hope all goes well for poor little Willow. Juno is sending healing licks.
Re: Nail ripped off!!!! Ouchy!! Poor lass. Definitely not an emergency Also, just call the vet tomorrow to see if they will just give you advice over the phone. Keeping it clean will be good if you can manage it but it will probably be hard to keep anything on her foot. It should grow back good as new
Re: Nail ripped off!!!! It's already stopped bleeding. It's kinda pale red, a bit like bone marrow At first, I thought it was blood ON the nail, but, no. I don't have a diddly how she did it :-\
Re: Nail ripped off!!!! Yeah, the quick is kind of jelly like... It's not too hard to do if they get the claw or their paw caught in something and then pull back suddenly. Don't worry, she will be ok Is she licking it or paying it any attention?
Re: Nail ripped off!!!! OH had a nail clipping incident with Mira once and exposed the quick : Blood. A lot of it. Didn't seem to bother her much - a bit of licking - and it healed up fine.
Re: Nail ripped off!!!! I had a similar thing with my cat a few months ago - he split on of his claws and it had got infected as we didn't notice for a few days; very furry and like Willow he wasn't lame or fussing at it at all. The vets had him in to sedate him and examine it as he wasn't too keen on them messing around with it. They did say if it was bad they would have to remove the entire nail but in the end they just clipped off the old bits of nail and bandaged it up. He had a bandage on for maybe 3 or 4 days and weeks worth of antibiotics. Two weeks later it had started to grow back and now it's normal. Can't tell it ever happened!

Re: Nail ripped off!!!! I'm sure it will heal up well. She might need a bandage and shoe to cover it, if you still have salt on the roads, Fiona.

She's going to be cranky!!!

Re: Nail ripped off!!!!
It's already stopped bleeding. It's kinda pale red, a bit like bone marrow At first, I thought it was blood ON the nail, but, no. I don't have a diddly how she did it :-\
Labradors are such rough and tumble creatures who love their adventures… makes them a little bit accident prone I think! Like my vet said when Maisie broke her teeth, it's because she's a goof always harrying about! Perhaps the same for Miss Willow. Maisie sends some licks and hopes Willow gets some extra sardines… and also she hopes she gets extra sardines… and everyone else too.
Re: Nail ripped off!!!! Four days ago I noticed one of Pongo's claws split completely in half - the 'outside' sheath hanging one way, the inner bit hanging the other - flapping about.... Looked dreadful, how can that not be painful? :-\ He hadn't noticed at all. Next day the flappy bit all fallen off, today no sign. Tough little creatures!
Re: Nail ripped off!!!! Scott broke his dew claw off a couple of months ago. I just kept it clean with salt and water. He was only interested in it when it had been salted. I don't think the vet will do anything other than tell you to keep it clean. If she starts to lick it a lot then it might have an infection and then you'd need to see the vet.
Re: Nail ripped off!!!!
I put a sock on her foot this morning. She's not impressed.
Not her colour?
