It was lots of fun :) Obi will sleep all of tomorrow!

Oh yes, he wanted to look fresh for the prize giving :)

We actually had another dog in our team who is very fast (a BC) but he had to pull out due to an injury. Zeke came into the team to substitute (but Zeke is not as fast). So we were a bit behind the 8 ball to start, relative to the speed we thought we could run, but the dogs all did so well and we ran faster than our best time in training. We managed 22.5 seconds, which is not going to break any records, but it's great for these dogs :) But most of all, it's just a lot of fun :D

    Thanks, everyone! :)

Generally speaking, Kelpies and BCs are the fastest over Flyball jumps, partly because they are a light build and fast runners but also because the distabce between the jumps was set according to the stride length of a Border Collie, so they find it easier than most other breeds to take the optimum number of paces (ie, one!) between each jump :)

So are the teams only allowed one of those breeds per team? Or are there regulations like that?

    Well done Obi (and Rachael!).

You've inspired Harvey and he tried his first ever session of flyball today 8) He found the whole thing hugely exciting but he managed to pick it up pretty well for a beginner. I can't quite believe just how fast he is

No, you can have any kind of dog you like :) All dogs in one team can be the same breed. But the height of the jumps is set by the height of the shortest dog - this is 5 inches shorter than the shoulder height of the shortest dog, down to a minimum jump height of 7 inches. So that means if you have a 12 inch high dog your jumps will be 7 inches. A team of Border Collies would all be much taller than 12 inches, so they would all end up jumping highish jumps that would slow them down. The ideal team is made up of mostly fast, lightly built dogs of moderate height (like BCs, Kelpies) and then one or two dogs of 12-14 inches that are also pretty fast and who will bring the jump height down for the taller dogs. Little dogs are allowed to use mini tennis balls.

At any competition the teams are divided up into Divisions, so you are always racing against teams that are competitive against each other. There were 10 Divisions at this comp, and we were in Div 5 (so there were at least 20 teams faster than us in higher Divisions that we weren't competing against). So it doesn't really matter at all how fast or slow your dog is - there is a team to suit every kind of dog :) Even in the very fastest Divisions the teams are often quite mixed in terms of their breed makeup. But one thing the really fast teams (like, world record fast) have in common is that they are short coated dogs. Long fur slows you down (too much drag).

UncleBob that's great that Harvey had fun at his first Flyball session! That's what it's all about - fun :)

Oh my goodness you should have seen me scrolling down all the lists to see if you won! Yay! What a great couple of days ,I feel like everytime I watch a video I understand a bit more,I notice everyone putting their arm out this time to indicate left or right for the ball....I think all the dogs do amazing with all the sights, sounds and smells around them, wow! Love that the little spaniel gets lifted and tucked under an arm

    Re: National Flyball Championships

The dogs just come to love it so much they focus entirely on doing their run and coming back to their handler for another go :)

Obi ran a personal best of 6.5 seconds. :D He did that in the first race of Day 2, when he was so excited to be there for another day but still fresh.

(A properly fast dog would be 4.5 seconds or under, but 6.5 isn't bad for a boy built for cuddles rather than speed :) )
