Fresh back from my hols minus pups (thanks to sister!) and off up into the hills with my Good Boy Now Off Long Line Brodick...Ha. He is being a little MONKEY again. still really good at recalls generally and still spins instantly when called. That is until he finds Tadpoles or Mice....but the new twist as of last night and this morning is that he doesnt ignore the recall (ie the usual labrador 'I've suddenly gone deaf'), he actually turns to me and his bursts into what can only be decribed as a huge grin, wags his tail furiously at me, grins a bit more, and then carries on mousing/tadpoling. Now he looks sooo cute its hard to keep serious with him but I've just been marching up to him and sticking him on the lead and removing him from the said tadpoles/mice. When Cuillin was about one she went through an insolent-faced defiance to recall, a sort of 'yeh, whatever' look (for about a week and then she panicked that she was being too naughty and reformed again!) but this is very different, that little monkey is obviously finding the whole thing a bit funny, if that makes sense!!? what do you think best to do, just ignore for a few days and get him back on track again, or go back a few stages with Total Recall...probably no harm to do both I guess!

Hi Debsie! I seem to be going through the same problem with my 1 1/2 year old labrador. Have you managed to sort it out? Any advise would be greatly appreciated. Michelle.

First ,I hope you had a lovely holiday Debsie ,bet you missed your dogs, despite Brodick's cheekiness today
!Now I'm confused......is it ok to put them straight back on the lead if they don't recall to you?..I've felt like I was doing that wrong the couple of instances I've done it.....but I didn't go and get Dexter,I charged off in the other direction and got him to come to me .......but then thought I was punishing him for coming back by putting him on the lead....sorry in writing this hope I'm not stepping on your post...just getting myself in a muddle !he got put back on the lead today for sure when I had to go and collect him from a stranger!he nearly got put straight back in the car ,walk over! ;)

hi folks. well happily this post was back at end may and brods is MUCH better. however this has taken a lot of training and repetition of training over and over! i have found a long line to be a really useful tool with the young wildlife obsessed monkey.

after this event i took him back to basics on Total Recall and took him through the programme again. shortly after this he went on forty two minute chaseathon with the ducks in that pond chasing them up and down the valley and back to the pond again. best day of his life so far he was in heaven. rubbish at the time but actually it turned out well as i had a real life training situation to work with. what i did:

banned any chasing of any kind with him on a long line learning the Ah Ah command. didnt take that long for him to go from screeching in frustration on the end of the long line to being able to walk past the ducks off lead. rewarded for not chasing with high value treats. any sign of chasing and he got a grumpy snarling at by me. only needed grumpy snarling for a few days, then Ah Ah sufficient as he hates being In Trouble

had him on long line on all walks with constant recall to whistle practice. over and over, building distraction levels carefully and gradually

focused on getting him as into the dummy as his big sis and increased his focus on me by doing bursts of dummy retrieving, general training, finding treats etc throughout walks. brodicks walks are quite heavily managed if we are near wildlife as his idea of heaven is hunting and flushing and chasing. im hoping to learn how to work with this instinct once we have mastered basic whistle commands. we are focusing on stop command just now

i dont put him on lead when i recall him unless wld be dangerous not to. i will go and get him if he is ignoring me and stick him on his lead, but i dont stick him on lead if he comes back even if he's taken his time!! returns are rewarded with a positive outcome

hes coming on brilliantly and is a pleasure to walk but does need to be kept busy round wildlife. luckily he is getting very into retrieving. on the beach/anywhere non rabbity/ducky/squirrely he is impeccable

really took a change in approach to walks with him along with a whole heap of focused recall work. hard work but paying off!!

helps that ive recently gone part time at work in a quality of life/spend more time with the dogs/return to triathlon move!

Hi Debsie, you certainly have almost cracked it with Brodick - brilliant news but you certainly have put the time in. I have also found that when Charlie is on a long training line and looks longingly at the birds in a field that 'leave it' and 'ah ah' are starting to have the desired effect. Sometimes also if he dives into a crop we use the same words and mostly he comes out. I have to say though, swallows are the bain of our lives as they swoop so low to the ground Charlie goes absolutely crazy, so we really have our work cut out with that little problem, that is until they fly away for Winter - hooray ;D Helen x

helen thats great! ah ah training does seem to work doesnt it. crikey Charlie is coming on too isnt he.! i still have to work at keeping brods with me and not haring off lost in his nose but we are getting there like you and Charlie....and you've put in the work in spadefuls! i was giggling at you looking forward to the departure of the Swallows in Winter. Im really looking forward to the ground nesting grouse disappearing off too as we are not supposed to let the dogs flush them between may and september because of the wee ones and its been bloomin difficult as they seem to wander about and Ms Cuillin in particular seems very drawn to them....roll on winter :)

Debsie have you still got Brodick on a training line? how do you keep him with you? David has been letting Charlie off lead in a safe area and he likes to run up and down the crops but comes back to check on him, but it is difficult to keep him close. Our thoughts are he is coming back without any recall, then a whistle recall when he is running towards us. Helen x

he is off his line in most places now and will generally stay within about thirty metres of me, like Charlie he runs back to check in on me. when we get near high rabbity areas i get the dummy out and we do retrieves and in the past few weeks he has really got into this and stays with me enjoying dummy throws. i'll walk him to heel in the real high population areas with my hand hovering over his harness. there are so many rabbits up the hills he nearly always has one chase a walk still if i don't see it first but the difference now is that once he starts to fall behind the rabbit and his focus on the chase wanes a fraction i whistle him and he will stop and come back....
