I finally have been able to trim Jubilee's nails without too much fuss, so of course today I cut one too short and she bled. It stopped fairly quickly and she did'nt fuss or cry, but I feel guilty. Anyway, how long should I wait until she can take a walk and run around without the nail bleeding again?

When I massacred Ella's nail, it was quite bad and bled for a while. We kept her quiet for about an hour after it had stopped bleeding but when I let her out she decided to do zoomies and it started bleeding again. However, we walked her in the evening without an issue.

I'd definitely recommend that you trim her other nails again really soon (just taking the tiniest bit off) just to make sure she's still ok with it. We made the mistake of leaving it after I cut Ella's nail and now we can't get clippers within 5 metres of her!

    Hi there,

I had a funny situation (well not funny ha ha) Dexter's nails were trimmed at the groomers,he was fine on the ride home then 10 minutes later he was licking and one of his claws was gushing.I clotted it with plain flour and wrapped it up but when talking about it was told by several people thatthe quick regresses really fast once it is exposed...that was definatelty the case with us,he was fine again in a few minutes....
Good for you trimming yourself....but what has happened to you is exactly the reason I am scared and being scared will probably make me less confident and so more likely to nick!

I take Doug to the vet to get his done I tried to clip his nails once after his SLO started and he screamed i never did it again. it cost 15 quid at the vets.... money well spent. A new vet did them last time and i could see she thought I was a hopless woman. Then she tried to cut them and saw what happened, she gave me such a look and I started to laugh and said do you she why I pay you to do it now. She'd never seen it before and was amazed and horrified but could understand why I wanted her to do it. The quicks are not attached to the outer shell of nail and when you cut they just crumble to pieces not healthy nail at all, but at least he has nails now there was a time when he had no nails and foot infections it was vile. my poor poor boy was so brave.
I trim all the other doggies though and am just really careful and take it slowly a little bit at a time. I also keep clotting stuff in the house for me and the dogs. There was a time when Dougs condition first developed that it was hard to do any trimming at all i lost all confidence and did not want to touch any dogs feet. I slowly had to build up my confidence again it took time.

I'd walk her again later the same day. Claws don't open up again with movement like a cut to the skin might. It's definitely guilt-inducing to make a claw bleed, but it's a tiny thing in the grand scheme.

My vet hates clipping nails.... She wants us to go to the groomers for they are more experienced! I am afraid of clipping nails too, for the same reason as you are Dexter! One of our dogs had a torn nail and that bled terrible. It was cut in halves and we had to go to the vet for the bleeding didn't stop. She tore the nail out.... bandaged him and we had to let it stay on for one day. After that the bleeding had stopped. So I know how much a nail can bleed and that doesn't make it easy to clip nails, I just am not that confident!

I did this the day my (human) baby was born - I was mortified and never cut his nails again lol! (He's nearly 30 and a nurse now)

I am lucky, pavement walking keeps both my dogs' nails short, or I would be asking the vet nurse to do it :)

Thank you for all the advice. I have lost my confidence a bit. Although I've cut dogs' nails for over forty years and only did it too short once before.

I usually do nails just before a walk and it has to be gushing for us not to go anyway. The walk is a reward for getting through the nail cutting and it smooths the sharp edges off. And if I do cut one I will still at least pretend to do more, which I think helps as it has all the motion but no snip. Oban is very tolerant though.

I had a funny one like Dexter on Christmas Day. Snipped them all, got in the car, went for a walk. Back in the car to home for lunch. Back in the car to my Aunt's nursing home, walk around there, visit people, get up on Aunt's bed. Back in car, go to my sister's house for our Christmas dinner. By this time about six hours had elapsed and what happens? We enter my sister's house and blood is all over her light coloured tile floor. It never bled till then. Weird. Sis is a nurse so she bandaged and Vet wrapped the foot to protect her light coloured carpet.
