Hey guys, I could use some help. For the past few weeks, I've noticed two small grey spots appear on the joint of my dog's hind leg. I'm pretty sure they've gotten bigger over time and hair doesn't grow on them. I'll include some pictures. He didn't have them as a puppy, only just appeared when he turned 3. His walking or running is not affected, he doesn't even know it's there; never licks or bites it. Photos: http://imgur.com/a/R9EzK
My black girl gets similar from time to time, just from running through undergrowth. They're little bits where she's pulled the hair out. It looks slightly different to where she wears the hair from laying on hard surfaces. The fact it's been going on a while would have me wondering, though. Maybe record it photographically each day, so you can see if it's changing?
My older Lab has the same but perhaps not so hairless. I think it is from lying down on a hard surface. My Lab always prefers to lie on the carpet, rather than the soft bed he has. However, nothing wrong with having a check with the vet just to make sure it isn't anything else and might need treatment.
By neighbours black lab has exactly the same, they say it's from running in undergrowth and from lying on hard floors.
Phantomous, could they be ticks? I had a cat once that had this, and it turned out to be a tick, so we gently removed it with a pair of tweezers.
Unless you actually see a tick somewhere, I wouldn't think it would be a tick(s). However, I know it's definitely more difficult to find newly attached ticks on black dogs, but engorged ticks usually are not that hard to spot as they change colour. IMO, it just looks like pressure spots that has rubbed off the hair (like most have mentioned). My black lab has a few spots. They use to be much bigger before, but then we got her a really nice "memory foam" bed. They decreased by like 80% in size and frequency. From my pretty extensive research, these were the top 3 beds in order: 1) Millard 2) Brindle (I bought this one since the Millard was not in stock and have been very happy with it.) 3) Big Barker (Cadillac of Large Breed Dog Bed, but out of my budget. *Probably not best for thinner/lighter labs/dogs - check with manufacturer.) *There are a lot of so called "orthopedic" dog beds out there that are just plain garbage. I used not only the reviews to make my decision, but also "fakespot.com" to separate the BS! reviews from the real ones.
