We have a vet appointment today for final shots and to make Zac's neutering/microchip appointment. He has been a maniac recently. Part of it is us not working as consistently with him. But I am also wondering if neutering will impact his behavior... (fingers crossed)
Re: Neutering - does it tame the beast? Uummmm depends on the behaviour. If it's testosterone driven behaviour yes, otherwise probably not. How old will he be when he's neutered?
Re: Neutering - does it tame the beast? I'd say as much as anything...his boisterousness is just a product of him being a young lab...he needs training, entertainment, and opportunities to just be a pup.... There was a thread I was reading just the other day about how neutering doesn't really calm them down....but I have no personal experience there...since I've only ever owned girl dogs.
Re: Neutering - does it tame the beast? 5 months... the behavior is stubborn counter surfing, jumping up and last night, snapping at us
Re: Neutering - does it tame the beast? I think it's unlikely. I think you were right the first time and it's about consistency and persistence. He's still very young. You'll get there and it'll be worth it
Re: Neutering - does it tame the beast? sigh... ok - everyone kept telling us that the "snip" would calm him down, but I had heard conflicting opinions. Better to just work with him anyway.. Just feeling frustrated since he bit a whole in my favorite down coat this morning. :-\
Re: Neutering - does it tame the beast? My two dogs began marking indoors (a lot) at 6 years old - the vet recommended neutering. It worked, they never did it again.
Re: Neutering - does it tame the beast? Oh dear! Going by my experience he sounds like he's just a typical lab puppy I'm afraid Sounds like he needs lots of toys and or chews to keep him occupied and distracted. Oh, and training of course ;D Keep plugging away at it when you can and be firm and consistent with the rules. There are times when it feels easier just to let them away with things, but that just makes them think it's always worth trying it on just in case..... Just like kids really! ;D
Re: Neutering - does it tame the beast? That's no good about your coat.... I don't think neutering will affect the behaviours you're describing, but it would help with or prevent 'sexual' behaviours like running/pulling after bitches in heat or trying to get out of the yard after them (if he was inclined to do such things). Your persistence with training will pay off though
Re: Neutering - does it tame the beast? thanks again for the feedback. We have been working more with him this week - but yet to see solid results - which i know is normal... and we have the trainer coming today with the "freedom harness" to help us deal with pulling. He is 43 lbs at 4 1/2 months and when he suddenly pulls, it's enough to knock me off my feet or pull muscles.
Re: Neutering - does it tame the beast? I totally sympathise with you. Every one you speak to it seems has an experience on neutering don't they. "You have a male dog? Oh! When is he being done? It will totally calm him down you know" I totally trust my vet and will be led by them if and when. We have been approached already to stud him out! I have read Pippas article and I'm not sure! With Rolo exercise is the key. A good off lead romp and a few training sessions and he's zonked out nicely. He will settle. (Rolo put a hole in my daughters school cardigan last night so I feel your pain)
Re: Neutering - does it tame the beast? Hee hee - the best one I ever heard was "your dog pulling on a lead is typical entire male behaviour". Yeah...that's true. It's also true of neutered males and females, and intact females... ;D ;D ;D
Re: Neutering - does it tame the beast? LOL - yes! Everyone has an opinion! In fact my mom watches a show with some guy called Dr. Pol and she swears neutering is the answer and she has seen enough to do the procedure herself! LOL and the vet actually said - Ohhhh a chocolate lab...no wonder he is so nutty.
Re: Neutering - does it tame the beast? Neutering is AN answer and usually to the question "how do I stop my dog making puppies?" And as for chocolate labs well everyone knows they're all mad : : : Gotta love those sweeping generalisations ;D
Re: Neutering - does it tame the beast? Don't get me started on that one! "Why did you choose a lab and especially a chocolate lab? They are so dim and untrainable" Argh!

Re: Neutering - does it tame the beast? I have two mad blacks ;D I remember telling the vet that I was going to get a black Lab after having my German Pointers, as they were easier, she said they are not, they are mad. I was so surprised at the time as I thought they plodded about at heel; how wrong I was! I am very happy with them being so lively and so full of the joy of life ;D
