Hi everyone, Otis is going to be neuterd on Thursday by the pdsa. I am just wondering what I should expect, post operation, will he have a cone collar? How do Istop him licking the wound if he dosent? Will he be dopey when we pick him up ? I am fine with him having this done, although obviously not something I paticularly like the idea of. Has anyone else had there dog castrated recently ? Thanks, Maggie
Re: neutering maggie daxter as just been neutered, angela will be more than happy to give you any advice you need, sorry i cant help you good luck otis, how old is he now ?
Re: neutering Otis is now six months old Lynne, he started on adult food tonight. I hope Ive got it right with the amounts, I weighed it all out looked on the packet for the amounts, and its just less than half what I was feeding him as puppy food, seems quite a difference, Im pleased its less though, as the food I get (Arden Grange ) is blimin expensive, but its good stuff. Re: neutering awh thats gone so quick maggie jasper is going on 10 months, i have not started him on adult food,.....i use large breed puppy food
Re: neutering Hi Maggie......yep,my boy was 'done' 10 days ago, stitches are coming out tomorrow. He could have his dinner as normal the evening before the op but then only water in the morning. Dexter hasn't actually bothered his wound so he hasn't really needed a cone but after Lisa having such a tough time with Simba I prepared Dexter for wearing it .Id bought him a soft blow up one called a comfy cone but he could still reach......and I didn't want him to start getting interested in the wound if he got a bit bored....so we ended up with the plastic one from the vets.I put it on him a few times a day for about 5 days and he slept in it the night before his op so he was really comfortable about it. He was a bit hyper when I picked him up which was freaking me out but he was starving ( he loves his food even MORE than the average Labrador I'm sure )I'd been told to wait another 2 hours to feed him but I gave him the tiniest meal after about an hour,to make him think he'd been fed properly and settle him down,I was so scared he was going to hurt himself......he wasn't sick or anything after eating so it was ok. The wound needed no post op care, the vet said just watch it and leave it........the second night I did feel it was a bit red and I thought I could see a bit of moisture on it .....but it was absolutely fine the next morning. He's been on lead walks for the whole time,no running and I haven't let him play with any other dogs either but the time has passed quickly and it has been really beneficial for our lead walking,it's really improved.i also didn't let him lie down anywhere outside for the first week and didn't let him go in any bushes that would brush across the wound.....the vet didn't say that I just thought it made sense to prevent any infection. Basically after a day, they are back to normal and he really IS back to normal, his usual happy, friendly self....it doesn't seem to have changed him in any way . He will be absolutely fine Maggie,I was really in a quandary over it but it hasn't been half as bad as I was imagining. Drop me a line of I can help you with anything else. Bye for now x
Re: neutering Hi Dexters mum, I think its Angela ? Thanks for all that, well the ops tomorrow, and then he is being left from friday afternoon with my mum and dad for the weekend. They adore him and will look after him very well, so Im sure he will be okay. I will be back Sunday night. Yes Ive had the same instructions from vets about water and meals, I was just wondering if he would be dopey from the anaethsia, but Dexter obviously wasnt ! Thanks again Angela. Maggiex
Re: neutering Maggie,I've been thinking about you and Otis, drop a line when you can to let us know how he has got over his op.... Best wishes to you both Angela x
Re: neutering Sometimes they can be a little dopey, but it depends on the dog They do recover pretty quickly, either way. Hope it all goes really well tomorrow
