We have a 5 month old black Lab puppy. She is good at weeing and pooing outside when taken outside but never asks to go or goes out if the door is open; she just wees where she is! She is dry for up to 10 hours overnight and has never poo'd inside. She is very bright and doing well with all other aspects of training but is very excitable with people and other dogs. We can keep her from peeing inside if we take her out very regularly but her interval varies between 30 minutes and several hours. At the moment this is taking over our life. How do we get her to learn to ask?

She does not understand that she shouldn't pee inside. When she starts peeing inside, stop her and get her out immediately. You should supervise her at all times and use a crate when you are not supervising. If you give too much freedom too soon you may not be there to correct her, thus she assumes it's okay to pee inside.

I have a somewhat similar issue with Jenny. At home we have a dog door so she can, and does, go out when she needs to, on her own. At our cabin we have to take her out. She is really good, but almost any time we take her out she will immediately pee a lot, but she doesn't ask to go out. I would like her to tell us that she needs to out, rather than just wait. Our previous lab Cooper would not really ask, but she would sit on the stairs so we knew she wanted to go out.
