wanting a new pup with our 4 yr old Rocky a black lab who loves all dogs but wandering how it would work as I would cage the pup and not my older, lab while we are out any advice please I would be very gratful
When we are out, our puppy goes in her crate in the kitchen and our 10 year old Lab is in her bed in the utility room. She has always gone in there when we are out and has plenty of space to wander about. She also sleeps in there at night.
Thanks... are they not In the same room then while you go out? I’m just wondering how a pup and older dog works with a crate. Also while Out walking do they go separate?
It’s good to have a crate for the pup at night time and when you pop out so that s/he can’t annoy/hassle the older dog. I also have two safe places for the older dog where the pup is never allowed to disturb her. And welcome to you from Mags, Tatze and Keir from Manchester UK Tatze is my pet dog, a black Lab and she's four years old. Tatze means 'paw' in German. Keir is my fifth Guide Dog puppy, a yellow Golden Retriever/Flatcoat cross and he's five months old.
No, the older one has always gone in the utility room. As they are separate at night, they just accept this. They are walked together for one very long walk. Puppy has a separate walk with DH after lunch and a short on lead walk with me early evening. Older one wanted to do the after lunch walk yesterday as well - first time she has wanted to do that for ages.
I crated my pup in the utility room at night and the two other dogs slept there as well, the pup derived company from the older dogs. I always took the dogs separately for walks until the pup was about 6 months, I wanted to bond with the pup and also do training.
You will have to walk the older dog separately some of the time to begin with, as his exercise needs will be much greater than the puppy's. Also, it is nice for the older dog to have some time alone with you. You will also need to do separate training sessions with the puppy, with the older dog not around (just five minutes or so), otherwise in my experience the puppy cannot concentrate properly and just wants to play with the older dog. Of course once the puppy has his vaccinations you can take them out for little walks together as well, but it is good to do things with them separately; as Stacia says this helps to create a bond between you and your puppy. Regarding crating and sleeping arrangements, we tried to crate Merlin (our puppy) but it was a disaster and after six weeks of very little sleep we gave up. Ever since then he has just slept in his dog bed next to Poppy's bed. It has meant that we have had to take it very slowly as regards going out and leaving the dogs alone in the house - he is seven months old and we can now leave the two of them alone together in the house for 3 to 4 hours when necessary. Luckily my OH works from home, so this has been possible for us.
Meant to say, our puppy Red was over 6 months before we started to walk them together. Before then they were walked separately.
I take them for a short free run together once a week - but normally they go separately because the four year old has much longer walks than the pup, who is currently on 30 minutes a day.
Hi I have a 1 year old male lab, getting a second lab at the week end but a female I'm worried my male lab will start to hump her and if she could get hurt ? I know it sounds silly
Just don’t let him do it, it’s not a good habit anyway. Dogs hump out of excitement - it’s nothing sexual or to do with being male - both my females humped each other sometimes. But you don’t need to worry - pups are really tough and can dodge unwanted attention really easily .
