We have just bought our very first Labrador puppy - Poppy! She is 2 weeks old and will be ready to come to her new home at the end of April. We are thrilled and very excited, also nervous about getting it right. Any help tips or advise on settling in our new addition would be welcomed. Cheers Claire -
Re: New puppy incoming Hello Claire and a warm welcome from me and my two dogs, Sam and Millie What a beautiful bundle of love you have coming into your life , and a spring time puppy too , always easier re toilet training as many young pups dont like going out in the cold You will find loads of good posts and articles in this puppy section, but if its anything specific , just shout and someone will help you
Re: New puppy incoming Hi Clare, and welcome to the forum! Have a look at the green posts at the top of the puppies board and have a look at this article First Days at Home Shout out with any questions you may have. Look forward to hearing all about your new pup's adventures
Re: New puppy incoming Hello Claire We're new puppy owners too - our boy Pongo is 14 weeks old now and has been with us for just over four weeks. It has been an interesting month! Great fun, absolutely lovely, but with lots of head-against-the-wall frustration at times. I just want to tell you how fantastic this forum is...I've used it for advice, but also just to let off steam when the little darling is driving me nuts - everyone is very, very supportive and has lots of really good experience and reassurance to offer. Put it as a shortcut on your desktop and visit daily! Enjoy your bundle of fun.... is he yellow or black? Rosie (and Pongo)
Re: New puppy incoming Congrats!!! It's so much fun bringing home a new puppy but be prepared that it is likely to take a few days to a couple of weeks for them to settle in. Do read the articles posted here and feel free to holler with any questions!
Re: New puppy incoming Hello and welcome! Are you gong to visit your new pup sometime soon? Just after some adorable puppy pics, you see. You'll find we feed on them on this forum. ;D Clare, with a 7 month old yellow Lab, and a senior spaniel
Re: New puppy incoming Thank you all for the warm welcome, we are all very excited. I am sure that we will be picking all your brains once we get her home. I did post a pic on the original post, however I think that it needs to be reviewed before it will show. Our breeder has assured me that she will be sending me regular picture updates, which I will be posting as they come in. We will be going back in 4 weeks time when she is 6 weeks old, to take her a blanket with our scent and to have a good play - Rosie - She is a yellow lab. Cheers Claire -
Re: New puppy incoming Welcome to the forum how exciting I'm sure you will find lots of useful info on here and lots of support . Look forward to seeing photos
Re: New puppy incoming Maybe you have approved it Kate. The other posts may have been made beforehand. It looks approved to me
Re: New puppy incoming Welcome to you and Poppy! Here's my tip - In the early weeks that you have Poppy, before she is fully vaccinated, you should still plan to give her as many new experiences as possible (you can carry her so she doesn't come into contact with the ground or unvaccinated dogs). Make a list of as many new experiences as you can think of and see how many you can tick off before she's 12 weeks old e.g. Kids Kids with stakeboards People wearing backpacks The airport Cafes Outside a school Bikes gong past Shopping centres People with big hats Old people Small animals Large animals Shopping centre at nighttime Wheelie bin being wheeled along Bus going past Etc. The more new, positive experiences that Poppy has the better. Dogs don't generalise well so we need to expose them to every variation that we can think of. We also need to actively create positive links with new situations in our puppies' minds. In these new situations reward Poppy with tasty treats for being calm and happy. If she appears stressed (cringing, weeing) increase the distance from the object to a spot where she's ok again and then reward the calm behaviour. So, not exactly 'settling into home' tip but more a 'settling into the world of humans' tip
Re: New puppy incoming Not sure why the picture is not showing. I am new to this forum, so maybe I haven't attached it correctly. Does anyone know how to attach pictures on? Cheers Claire
Re: New puppy incoming And animal statues! I forgot those! Not that they were a huge deal, but needed a few treats. ;D ;D ;D [quote author=Oberon link=topic=4917.msg61534#msg61534 date=1395089647] Kids Kids with stakeboards People wearing backpacks The airport Cafes Outside a school Bikes gong past Shopping centres People with big hats Old people Small animals Large animals Shopping centre at nighttime Wheelie bin being wheeled along Bus going past Etc. Re: New puppy incoming Hi Racheal - thats great advise, we have already started to make a list of the places that we are going to take her. I never realised how important it was and that there is such a small window of opportunity!! Thank heavens for research. Claire -
