Hi there. I have just joined today. We are first time dog owners and our new black lab puppy will be coming home in about 3 weeks. I'm looking for some help on choosing a crate for her. Should we get a 36" or a 42" crate? We expect that when she is older she will not need to be crated.
Hi Pauline and welcome to the forum. I would go with the biggest crate you can fit in, as, once your pup is toilet trained, it will give her more space when she needs to be crated. Until she sees the crate as her "den", you'll have to use a divider, or block off part of the crate, so she doesn't go to the toilet in it.
Hi Pauline, just wanted to say hello and welcome to you. We went for the bigger crate too and didn't regret it as Lilly (now approaching 7 yrs old) used it regularly until she was around 2.5 and we just didn't put it back up after a holiday. She still makes a bee-line for other dog's crates when we are visiting relatives. Partitioning it in the early days definitely helps if you want to crate train potty-ing. Are we allowed to ask for photos? there is some info in Technical & Help section on how to do this jac
Hi and welcome from me and 7yr old Lucan. I'm also picking up my new pup in about 3 weeks too, a little black Lab we're going to call Ash. My 36" crate will be coming out of retirement for the new addition. I've found it big enough even for an adult, although Lucan isn't a massive Lab, it's also a handy size to fit in the boot of many estate cars.
Welcome Pauline from Hattie 9 years and rescue boy Charlie 6 years. Exciting times ahead. I had the largest crate too, better too big than too small! x You kept that quiet Mandy, how exciting. Good luck with Ash, what a lovely name. Of course we will need to see photo's. xx
Hi and welcome from me and 3 year old red fox girl, Harley. She is my first dog too. Look forward to seeing some photos
Hi and welcome from me and my boy Bailey an 11 month old nutcase! Exciting times for you! We had the smaller size for Bailey when he was small and he was happy in it - we didn't want a bigger one so we decrated when he was reliable enough not to chew everything in sight and toilet trained.
Welcome to you from Mags, Tatze and Mollie Tatze is my pet dog, a black Lab and she's three years old. Tatze means 'paw' in German. Mollie is my fourth Guide Dog puppy, a black Lab and she's sixteen weeks old. ...
Thank you all for your warm welcomes and your views. We decided to go for a 42" crate with a divider. The puppies are being fed on Eukanuba puppy food. What are your views on this brand and how long should she be on it?
Good choice with the 42 inch crate. I have both the 42 and 36 inch crate. He barely fits standing up inside the 36 crate and I will need to change that one out for a 42 soon.
Hi Pauline a warm welcome from me and two year old choccy girl Mabel. I bought a big crate that came with a divider and it was invaluable. It also had three doors one of which was "up and over" which meant I could pretty much put it anywhere. At the time I was restricted on space because of building work so it turned out to be brilliant which was luck more than judgement .
